During the remainder of your trial, you could make a list of the audiobooks you want, then borrow-buy-return until finished. It's a shame your public library is dropping OverDrive. That rules out doing the above via that route.

Yup, that's the plan!

I think I'm going to have to rejoin FLP, as my library's switch to Axis 360 means I can't get audiobooks, or Kindle books to get the Whispersync prices.

Actually, that ties into the tablet/smartphone issue--I can't even try Axis 360 with my current version of Android.

Woe is me! Such first world problems!

A couple of my libraries are starting to use Axis. That probably explains why their OverDrive collections are growing at a slower rate than before. I won't use Axis because it lacks Kindle support. Luckily, I have a large collection of OverDrive libraries at my disposal.

Built-in obsolescence. Device is still good but OS is no longer being upgraded. Then apps come along that require newer OS, thereby turning working device into fancy paperweight.

I would think the libraries would get backlash from Kindle users--after all, they just got support from Overdrive, and now it's been yanked away. And for epubs, it looks like with Axis 360 there's only support for computers and Android devices, not for dedicated ereaders.

Seems like libraries should be trying to be more accessible, not less. It's horrible! I need to make a YouTube video like Weird Al!

I have an option for ADE on my Axis that allows transfer to eink ereaders.

Have you contacted your library and expressed your dissatisfaction? In the past, I have voted against bond issues and tax increases for my library when I was not pleased with them.

I have also used Axis books via ADE. I only couldn't use hoopla audiobooks because it was either use pc or android device. I have never tried to listen audiobooks on pc.

I didn't know that Axis books could be transferred to ereaders. I had been borrowing Kindle books almost exclusively, in order to get the special pricing on the companion audiobooks.

I used the library's online feedback form to write a long complaint when they first announced the switch. A site glitch (or maybe it was intentional!) made it disappear into a black hole when I tried to submit it; at that point I was far too angry to make any sense so I refrained from trying again.

Overdrive is apparently too expensive for my library, which has other priorities:

• Queens Library president gets $390G salary, luxe office makeover while shedding 130 jobs
  
• Officials Investigating Spending by Director of Queens Library
  
• Cuomo Signs Bill Seeking Reforms at Queens Library
  
• 8 Are Removed as Queens Library Trustees
  
• Six former Queens Library trustees sue to get their positions back, calling ouster 'brazen and unconstitutional'

Axis gives you an epub option. Kindle has two advantages over epub: 1) wireless transfer of books; and 2) Whispersync pricing.

How's your Axis selection and size?

Can't you get a free Brooklyn library card? Brooklyn has one of the largest OverDrive ebook collections in the country. It's almost 3x larger than FLP.

Brooklyn Public Library's card is free for anyone who lives, works, pays property taxes or goes to school in New York state. There is a limit of one library card per person.

That's very sad for the 130 library workers who were laid off, but in the Library President's defense, when you're making over a third of a million dollars a year, you need a nice office, and the $140,000 it took to make his presentable doesn't grow on trees.

What a mess!!! You should keep trying the online feedback. Also email the board of directors, head librarians, post on the library's Facebook page, Twitter, etc.

Then contact your state reps and let them know your displeasure. If that doesn't produce results, let them know how unhappy you'll be on election day.

Yep. Anyone who qualifies for a QPL card also qualifies for a BPL as well as a NYPL card.
