I don't know. I've always thought it was more a fantasy, but I can see your point with how the car can do different things. Incidentally the author of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" is also the same man who invented 007. i.e. Ian Fleming.
It's for sale at kobo for $6.29 though with the coupon it drops to $3.77 which isn't bad.

Characticus Potts (sp?) could invent most anything, too. Was there a book behind that movie?

Yep, that's the one that I included the link to in my post. Dick Van Dyke played the inventive Mr. Potts and Lionel Jeffries played his father. Incidentally Christopher Lee is a cousin of the author and he played a character in one of the 007 movies.

Is anyone currently reading any steampunk novel or story?

I'm reading one I just obtained from Amazon: "Lady of Devices," by Shelley Adina. It's a very short novel, and quiet enjoyable.

It's also free from Amazon, right here:

Yes, so good! It's the first book in the Magnificent Devices series. I just abandoned my Miss Marple marathon to start the third book

Slightly off the ebook line but still about steampunk and deals:

Starting today and for the rest of the month, the BETHESDA SOFTWORKS game DISHONORED is free for XBOX Live Gold members.

The game is set in a decidedly steampunk world with a unique gameplay mechanic wrapped around a "choose your own adventure" RPG narrative about a wrongly-accused fugitive turned "assassin" that can be played non-lethally. Easily worth its original full price.

Even if you don't play, here's the CGI debut trailer for a look at the steampunk world of Dunwall:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7JP58KLK3A

It is a thoroughly realized quasi-victorian realm.

Has anyone here found any sites that are good resources for information that would be useful in writing Steampunk?
