Paperwhite not taking charge
My 2 year old Paperwhite has not been used in several months. Plugged it into the computer yesterday and it doesn't seem to be taking a charge, the orange light is on. The screen just shows an empty battery and will not turn on.

What do I do?

Try using a wall charger and leave it plugged in for several days.

Overnight should be sufficient, but I'd definitely try with a wall outlet. When your computer goes to sleep, it might actually drain the battery instead of charging it.

Whenever the orange light is actually lit, half the battle is won. Just leave it charged...

Indeed it should but it could take several days so just to be on the safe side... I once had to leave a HP TouchPad plugged in for a whole week before it even showed the "empty battery" picture on the screen the battery was that low that there was absolutely no sign of life until that point.

Two Days and it is now charged. Guess I need a wall charger.

When the battery goes, does it mean a new reader? Or can the battery be replaced?

The battery can be replaced on Kindles.... This company carries batteries for all of them, and there are videos on the pages for the various batteries.
