Hmm, now that I looked into it it seems those files are used to get the disk drive information in some cases... and could be a reason why PIM.DLL doesn't work. I need to check how they are registered on a supported OS.

I just got a PRS-500 from the Flea Market, but I can't install the drivers. I have WinXP x64. I tried unpacking the installer as described in the first post in this thread, but windows still says it can't find any drivers, even when I point it to the Drivers subfolder.
Is there any way to get it to work? If necessary, just as a mass storage device - I'll upload the books to the reader myself. It came with a memory stick but I don't have a card reader. ![]() |

Well, I guess I can use my laptop to transfer books to the reader, then. It will be a bit tedious to do all the time as all my books are on the main PC, but I'll live.

You could also put the books on an SD card. Although Mac's don't seem to include those so you would need to get a USB/SD adapter/reader. BOb |

Solution!
I think I might have found a way to get Digital Editions to work on Vista x64. I installed the Reader software using the extraction method to Program Files (x86)\Sony. Then, using the very helpful linked solution in post 4 as a guide, I added the registry key that the zip files contains, only I added them using Regedit by myself.
But, instead of putting the registry key in at HKLM\Software\Sony Corporation, I put it in at HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Sony Corporation. As soon as I started Adobe Digital Editions, it detected my reader, and I could transfer to it. I think this is the right spot because of the way Windows x64 provides access to the registry for 32 bit programs. To put it simply, at HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Sony Corporation\PRS, I put the following string value: C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Sony\\Reader\\Data\\bin\\ Hope this helps someone! |

I have a Sony 505. When I first began downloading books form a public library, using Adobe Digital Editions, I had no problem. However, recently, I have to authorize the Adobe Digital Edition required EVERY TIME, or worse, have to upgrade, even though I have the most up to date version.
Secondly, and perhaps even more important, I no longer can download at all. The book does appear to download, but inevitably I get an error message. When I used the help at Adobe, they actually told me to update the software! Since this is a constant it did not work Any ideas? Any alternatives to Adobe Digital Editions that will work with the library ebooks and transfer to my 505? ej |

This is my first post! I've been lurking on this site for awhile, finally took the plunge and bought the Sony 505 yesterday. Thanks to this post, I was able to install the Sony Library onto my Vista 64bit OS. It was easy and went without a hitch. The problem I'm having is getting ADE to recognize the device. If I can't get it to work, I may have to return the Reader. One of the main reason I got the Reader was so that I can borrow library books, so I really do need the ADE to work. The problem I'm having with the instruction is the "edit the pim file" part. I downloaded and unzipped the pim file, but when I right click on it, I don't have an option to open it with notepad. How do I go about editing this file? Thanks in advance. |

My combination of igorsk / leaping gnome / mrpeatyguy’s instructions – everything works as it should as far as I can tell
1. Download the eBook software. 2. Copy it to an easy location, like C:. 3. Go to a command window (Start -> Run -> Type "cmd") 4. Navigate to where you saved it, if you saved it on C:, just type "cd\" to go to the root of the C: drive. 5. Type the name of the file and a /a switch. Since the default name has spaces you'll need to use quotes. The command should look like this - "Ebook Library Installer" /a 6. Go through the prompts and it will ask you where to save the files, this installs the program where-ever you want, I put it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\.. Note that it will create a program files\sony folder path under the folder you installed it to. I cut the Reader folder and all folders beneath it back to my original install point and then removed the C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\program files folder. 7. It's all installed! Now it will not auto-create the icons for you, so if you want that, go to the next step. 8. The executable is in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Reader\Data\bin - Right-click and choose Send To -> Desktop (create shortcut). This will place an icon for it on your desktop. 9. Start Regedit (Start -> Run – Type “regedit”) and create the PRS\PIM_PATH key a. in Regedit navigate to HKLM\ Software\Wow6432Node\Sony Corporation\ b. Right click on Sony Corporation and create a new key name it PRS c. Right click on PRS and create a new string value, name it PIM_PATH d. Double click PIM_PATH and give it the value “C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Sony\\Reader\\Data\\bin\\” 10. Start The Sony eBook Library and log into the Sony Book Store 11. Install Adobe Digital Editions – make certain that your user name is identical to your Sony book store user name – I think your passwords need to match as well but I could be being overly cautious there. At this point I have everything working. :-) Thanks to all who helped / participated in this his thread. K |

If you absolutely MUST use the Sony Library software on a 64-bit OS (XP/Vista) -- just install it on a virtual machine. I use VMWare 6.5, you can get "Virtual PC" from Microsoft for free.
And I am SURE you have a copy of XP laying around... right? Right? If not, I'm sure you know where to go. Heck, even Win2k. y'know, just FYI! |

Thank you to everyone in this thread.
I was able to install the Sony eBook Library software on my Vista Home Premium 64 bit AND I was able to authorize with Adobe Digital Editions. I now have a library book borrowed on my 505! The installation of the Sony library was pretty easy and straightforward, it was the regedit part that got me all confused, but defaulthtm set me straight. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Sorry, forget this:
This thread just covers manual installation of eBook Library I think? Any idea how to manually install Digital Editions? I installed the eBook library, although not from the CD as that gave "Incorrect region" errors (strange, I bought it in the UK and am in Denmark right now). Anyway, eBook library seems to work. But when I click "Adobe Digital Editions" from the CD menu, it comes up with a web page, I click the big Install button, click install again and get an error saying: "A Download error occurred, try to Download again?". The error repeats as long as I try again. My internet connection is working, I'm using it now and used it to download the eBook software. My 505 is plugged into the PC. I gather than I need to install Digital Editions in order to authorise my Reader for DRM books. Please help. Thank you. Edit: Sorry, ignore me. The download for digital editions was on the same page. With the release of bookstore 2.5 I found that installation and linking to DE got a whole lot easier. Really just standard download and install. You might check to see that you have an appropiate version of Java installed...
