To search in the books itself (and if it is just for metadata) takes a lot of time and is exactly the reason why I do not use Nickel anymore (after the last time my database got corrupted I could not get Nickel to index all my books anmorre, I gave up).

But why just a "sort by"?
It really is a search in the fields title, author, tags, series, path or any combination of these 5.
Just going by the options I see, since I don't use calibre to put files on my device I don't get far enough to see how it works. So you search with arguments for those fields and get back a list of matching files? Even for the AuraHD it might be taxing to have it generate, and maintain, a similar index file for the files and their properties/metadata. Perhaps it could be done from a PC producing a searchable index file from the user's "library" on a connected device and/or external uSD card. Then it might function on the less powerful kobos.
(OH No. not a Koreader Desktop?)

Luck;
Ken

@Ken, yes, you enter a search item, and it searchs within the metadata you want it to.
Why not simply use Calibre to put the files there?
Just give it a try by putting some books in a new directory by calibre just to see how it works...

Well, I wanted to compare koreader to see if it squeezes words together on other devices, as it does on my Kindle. Having no success with Kobo, I tried the android version on my Nexus 7, with the result that yes, it does delete spaces between words at random intervals. Why, I can't say. So, I won't be using Koreader on my Kobos. But I will use it on the Paperwhite. It's great!

(ETA I should note that I only tried koreader on an old, somewhat banged up Kobo Touch. It could be the device itself that is the problem).

This is a specific problem of some Touch. See this post of how to handle it.

No, this is not related to your problem.

It does not sound like a correct behavior, if you called nickel from the start menu. Maybe nickel was started automatically after booting? Did you edit the usersettings to prevent this? See here. Sorry, I know this is a pain. I will change this in future packages.

Any idea how to identify the devices that need this switch?

Since I have a Touch B and a Touch C, and both need the switch, I thought that all but the oldest version(s) of Touch need it. But there was a discussion on Github that indicated that this is not the case. So I don't know.

I tried it and it is impressive. Not sure how the "Path" option works? I put ~655 books on using calibre and it seems to work as advertised. Even a partial series name got me the proper list.

I tried changing the code on the Touch. Still didn't work (couldn't do a thing with koreader). So, decided to try it on my Aura. It works just fine. So I think the issue is the Touch that I have, which probably has issues.

And I think I know why words are running together. It's because I use the hyphenate this plugin in Calibre. I put one that hadn't been hyphenated on the device, and no problems.

I have included lpath in the search since calibre always writes data there with english letters, so no umlauts or Chinese characters or anything like that.
When I wrote the search I did not have umlauts in the keyboard (I have enhanced the keyboard since then), so there was no way to find names with umlauts since I simply could not send a request for them.
It still might be useful to be able to search for those, but it is not as important as it was earlier.

I wonder, is there any way or any plans to view metadata before reading books, like in nickel or calibre companion?

Thank you. I'll probably not.
Most of the people here are well behaved and very helpful, so its OK.

In the snapshot that I uploaded, there where two "empty spaces" that I would like to shorten.
The first is the space between the right side of the progress bar and the 'battery percent' (88%)
The second is the right margin after the 'pages left' (>9)

Hi,

How can I make standby mode to show the book cover instead of the standby message?

Thanks!
