I found I had to get, compile and install libgd in order to install the GD perl package. Is this not the case if you use ActiveState perl?

Yeah -- the proposed new macbook would be Leopard. That alone might help!
WOW... Deb... I just got this working. Took a while... believe me. I will be writing up the steps to do it soon. I think the biggest issue is that you need to install libgd which wasn't installed on my Mac. I am wondering it if is part of the optional dev tools. I will check that next. Other than that it needs to be downloaded, compiled and installed. If you don't do this you can install the GD perl module.

Well, you definitely don't on the MS Windows side of things. I haven't tested it on a Mac, specifically. There are huge repositories of pre-compiled packages for ActiveState (and any other Perl that supports the PPM format, for that matter, though I think the only other one is StrawberryPerl), and that's what I use. I don't even have a functioning compiling environment set up at the moment on my Windows box, but GTK works fine.

The only issue I remember for ActiveState Perl was that the GD package had to be taken from another place than the main archive.

All I know was that when I tried to install the GD perl libray with CPAN I got an error that libgd did not exist. You could compile with -ignore_missing_gd but I wasn't sure if that would work... also, I couldn't figure out how to pass that to the install in CPAN. It just seemed to ignore it.

Once I installed and complied libgd on my Mac I was able to install the Perl GD module without error.

The hard part about getting this to work was figure out where to get everything and the dependecies.

tome... do you know if installing the GD library with the -ignore_missing_gd flag would work for your mobiperl stuff?

I assume that the perl GD module for windows uses Windows 32 libraries, perhaps GDI to do the graphics handling which is of course already installed on every windows machine. So, this makes sense.

I certainly want to supply the minimal amount of steps to people to get this working on mac. If I can skip the installing of libgd I certainly would.

Does the Mac ActiveState Perl also have PPM repositories at Bribes/Trouchelle/UWinnipeg? I never even got CPAN to work at all on the MS Windows ActiveState Perl (it seems to have a broken YAML) -- I just added all of the extra repositories to the PPM manager, and then installed what I needed precompiled.

I don't know. I never actually tried ActiveState. That was my next plan if installing libgd didn't resolve my issue. But, since it did I just through the ActiveState dmg into the trash and went to bed.

I have not tested this but I would not think so since the library is used to rescale images.

I will be holding my breath for your MobiPerl instructions, PilotBob. I thought I was semi-savvy, but after using the install package for ActivePerl --- I don't know where to go from here. I can't even type "ppm" at a command line, to add the Palm module -- cause it doesn't recognize "ppm" or "PPM". So I'm at a loss where to go from here!

Thanks for your (eventual) help!

That's... interesting. Did the installer create an icon for something named "Package Manager" or similar?

If your avatars would stop distracting me I would get right to it.

I will certainly do it this weekend... probably tomorrow. You can go ahead and remove ActiveState perl because my instructions don't use it... the built in perl for darwin works fine.
