Paperwhite - Problem using the dictionary
Hi guys!

I have the Paperwhite 1.

I want to know if anyone have the same problem as me. I find it hard to "activate" the dictionary. I touch the word and sometimes works and sometimes don't. Instead of showing the dictionary's pop up, it changes the page. And I find it even more difficult to do it with words in the first lines of the page, it always brings the menu.

Is that a common problem or it's just me and my stupid fngers? Is there a trick to make it works as it's suppose to work?

My biggest problem is that I often manage to pick up multiple words, and thus the Kindle thinks I want to make a highlight. It really is just precision and pressure. I haven't got it quite down yet, and it's been a couple of years.

Perhaps you aren't holding down for long enough to select the word? I don't think pressure has anything to do with it, but it does seem to me to be highly time-dependent.

You need to "tap and hold" for the dictionary definition. A short tap will simply turn the page (or display the menu bar if you're at the top of the screen.

I can only say "you're doing it wrongly", I'm afraid. If the page is turning, it's registering as a tap, and not a hold.

No, it has absolutely nothing to do with pressure - just the duration of the contact. Capacitive touchscreens are not pressure-sensitive.

Two things occur to me:

(1) Maybe if you thought of it more of a touch and hold rather than tap and hold. Just gently touch the word you want defined until it's highlighted, then release and let the dictionary define it.

(2) If your finger finger is covering more than one word at a time, perhaps changing to a larger font would make the touch and hold process more accurate.

I wonder if there might be a flaw in the capacitive layer of the screen so that it can't maintain contact under pressure and your tap and hold is perceived as a tap or series of taps.

I'm just speculating. I haven't heard of this happening before but it would explain why you can't tap and hold effectively.

I think I'd call Kindle support and ask them about it.

That is why I never tap to turn the page, I always swipe. Advantage of swiping as well is to never open the menu instead if swiping near the top or bottom of page. Swiping works to turn the page even where a tap would open the menu. My thumb is always too high to tap the way I hold my PW.

Have you updated to the latest firmware? I noticed my PW is much more responsive with regards to opening the dictionary since it has 5.4.4.2?
