They aren't.
Apparently, all they are interested is outright purchases at full list.

It is like Hollywood only tracking DVD sales and ignoring all cable, satellite and streaming income.

For KU, the word from Author Earnings is that average payout from sales of ebooks in the Prime Lending Library is $2 and "coincidentally" Amazon has maintained the compensation pool size to deliver about $2 per read. For most authors in KOLL for the last three years, a read is the same as a sale.

Worse, at Oyster and Scribd, the 60% per-read compensation is no different than putting an ebook on sale for 40% off (which the BPHs have done regularly once agency ended) so not tallying up those paid reads just isn't defensible.

The best one could say is they're too lazy to try to get good numbers.

I can only speak for the NYT bestseller list. They only count purchases made directly by customers. In other words, customers take their books to the cashier and hand over cash or credit card. The same goes for online purchases.

Subscriptions services have never been included by the NYT in the past. Subsidized purchases (such as Scribd & Oyster) aren't counted as they have proven to be abused to beef up sales numbers. Example: a group of people can easily flip through 10% of hundreds of titles each month forcing Scribd to blow through any cash reserves they have. The subscribers aren't paying for each "read" but Scribd is.

It is a good thing that Amazon includes read books of KU in their best seller list. If a book is more popular than another book it will earn more money. Showing up in the best seller list will push them up in KU and for direct sales. Boosts the author as well as create income for Amazon.

And a subscription should probably count as a paid sale. The author makes money and so does the publisher. And in general, the reader is paying something. The amount paid might be in question but the publishers and authors negotiate WHAT they will be paid upfront. In other words, I get paid full price for the novel just like I would a purchase. Whether the reader ends up paying more or less than that depends on how many books she reads.

Don't get me wrong. I don't care if they count them as sales or not, but the reader is paying and the writer is earning, so the way I personally define that, it's a sale.
That's true from the writer's perspective. From the reader's perspective--I'm paying $9 a month to join a library (starting...this month, since I had the 3 month free trial) and I get to borrow available materials. I don't get to keep any of the books permanently. That is not a sale to me. That's a borrow.

In 3.5 months I have read 41 books on Scribd and paid $8.99; that's not a bad value for me but I guess Scribd is probably losing money on it.

What version of the scribd app do you use?

I tried the iPhone app and could not use it. There was no ability to change to my preferred font (Caecilia or similar) and no margin or line spacing adjustment.

In the end I cancelled my account after begging them to allow users to settle in comfortably.

The idea of $8.99 for great books from first rank publishers really appeals but they obviously don't care for user comfort.

I use the app on the iPad mini but I have to confess that I don't really care much about font style or spacing; as long as I can get the font large enough for my middle-aged eyes I am good to go. (Margins can be an issue but they are fine on the iPad). I did read on my phone and didn't like the look, but I don't prefer to read on my phone overall because there isn't much text on the page no matter how you slice and dice it and my phone battery life is not ideal.

I have been unable to find a way to get one of these borrowed audio books to my Clip Zip. I can listen to it on my Windows Phone. (Browsing the phone over my PC, can't find the audio files). So while I can carry my phone around, it is not ideal (requires a pocket if I am moving around).

Has anyone figured a way to get one of these audio books onto a non i-thing mp3 player?

Are the files downloaded from Audible? If so, check out this help page:

I can't download the borrowed audio books to my phone at all. I can only stream to my PC.

They're in Audible, only you can't download them to your PC. Downloads are only allowed on mobile devices via the Audible app. The files will have to be downloaded onto a compatible mobile device, then transferred to a PC, and then to the Zip.

I'm not keeping this service, so I haven't attempted it. Someone here at MR was able to do it, but I can't remember where I saw it.

Yes, it can only download to an app. I turned wifi on on my Windows phone, downloaded and installed the app, then plugged it into my computer and transferred them via the audible app on my PC.

I can play them (wifi off FYI, no streaming) but can't find them when I plug the phone into the PC. They must be hidden somehow.

I'm not following you. You transferred the Audible files from your phone to your PC Audible app or you transferred the Audible files from the PC Audible app to your phone?

I downloaded successfully KU borrowed books to the audible app on my android tablet. There is still some books that don't show up, even if it says the audiobook is included with KU. If you return a book then the next time you open the audible app the downloaded book will disappear.

Also got my first complementary credit through KU. Do I have to cancel anything after the 3 months? I intend to keep KU, but don't want to pay for audible. Would I still be able to listen to KU audiobooks with only paying the $9.99 for KU?
