I bought this and this and this to mop up a few coins (and got 180 back, but it's nibbling away at 'em). The reviews aren't stellar and "Metroploitan" is offputting, but I figure I'll get my money's worth. Perhaps they might be of interest to others sitting on a stack of coins.

Same here, I've got 5,377. I bought some in December while they were on sale with the intent of purchasing all the KairoSoft games and all the PathPix games. Did that, and then ended up with so many free coins in the past couple of months that I got everything back I had spent.

I did notice they've added some more KairoSoft games, so I'll probably sink some coins into those. But the bargain hunter in me wants to wait to see if they put them on sale again before buying them.

I'm in the same boat. I think a lot of people are. If you're new to the Amazon Appstore, the coins are a bargain, but most of us aren't and have the majority of the store already.

It doesn't help that the store isn't even growing (except in junk). The majority of developers that are on the Play Store aren't on the Appstore.

Some developers don't bother to update the stuff that they have on Amazon. Some are quite far behind the current version on Play. There are several that I've only gotten because they were available free. If I'd had to pay, I'd have gotten the Play version.

I also saw someone complaining on the Instapaper reviews because people were pleased with it on their 1st gen Kindle Fire. Well, those reviews are from two years ago now. How much has changed since then? Instapaper was sold last year, and now it requires a minimum of Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0).

The Amazon Appstore is lacking in so many areas. The only reason people live with it is because Amazon gift certificates are so easy to come by, that and the crazy amount of freebies being handed out pretty much everyday.

I think the Coins program will vanish next year. They're going to have to make cuts somewhere with how their earnings are right now anyway.

While I am usually the one making the case that Fires are indeed 'real Android tablet' despite not having Play stuff, I basically agree.
But I would not characterize the relationship as "The only reason people live with it..."
The Fire is aimed at Amazon-centric-content-consumer-type users, and the Amazon app store probably serves most of that audience just fine.

For those who have other devices and prefer the Play store, it's not a matter of having to live with it. We'd have to choose to install it if we want it, and we want it, 'cuz, hey, free apps.

I use my Fire HD as a media device (movies, music, audiobooks, radio). For that role, it's great! When I want to do "real" Android stuff, I break out my Nexus 7.

If I had to restrict myself to one tablet, I'd go with the Nexus. Gotta have Play.

I also have the problem where there's really not very many paid apps I want period. Not even on Google Play. Most of the ones I might be interested in are priced too high and I just don't want them that badly. I wouldn't even spend the coins on them if they were on Amazon's App store. Pretty much every paid app I wanted I already have other than the overpriced stuff.

I actually try to use Amazon over Google Play whenever possible. I've run into issues with apps showing as not compatible on Google Play when they really are, but show as compatible on Amazon just fine. (In particular, every Where's My _____ app by Disney. Who I will no longer purchase ANY app from because of that crap.) Also, I can share apps across my tablets and my mother's if I use Amazon but have to buy them twice on Google Play because we both have our own Google account. Amazon does have some advantages, they just don't push them enough. Being able to share apps across multiple Google user's devices would be great for a big family especially.

I doubt they'll go away, and the earnings are bad because Amazon has gone a bit overboard in expanding. The money sunk into the Fire phone was a big part of that. It remains to be seen if that was a wise investment or not. (I personally do not see the appeal, I doubt I'd take one for free. I certainly wouldn't replace my full Android phone with a Fire!)

I actually expect to see them expand what coins can be used on in the future. They'll probably add books/movies/music eventually.

It'll fail because of pricing. It should've been sold unlocked and priced like a Nexus. I'd get one if they did that. I'd use it as a pocket Fire tablet.

Yep, given what all you lose from regular Android versus FireOS, paying full price for a phone using FireOS is a joke. The main thing it has going for it is, as I've seen multiple reviews state, an "integrated shopping experience." I kinda doubt there's a huge amount of people who want a smartphone mostly so they can buy stuff from Amazon.

But if it does, somehow, get popular, maybe it'll help the Appstore get more apps and existing apps to get updated faster. That'd be a good thing for everyone.

I'd consider that, if it didn't require a data plan. As it is, no thanks. No data plans in this house!
