Amoled blacks are very very good, plus I seem to remember the screen having some sensor that adjust the colors and whatnot depending on ambient light, you had your heart set on it, call samsung and ask just in case. Just checked and I see no screen modes in the Pro, but the screen should be on par with the nexus 7 in terms of color reproduction and brightness, check the anandtech reviews for the tablets they usually do in depth stuff that no one else does on screens and such.
I'm pretty sure the tab S also comes with the galaxy perks, even if amazon does not list them. |

You are correct about the perks, I checked on the Samsung site. I have a couple of weeks before I need to decide. Thanks again for all your help!

The perks almost justify buying a device for me. The S series perks include 1 year or 36 flight segments, whichever comes 1st, of Gogo wifi. An unlimited Gogo plan runs about $40/month, a single flight session around $10. So long as I use the 36 sessions within a year (likely), I'm getting an S at an effective $360+ discount. Of course, Gogo might drop their absurd rates, and I could live without wifi on a lot of trips. Gogo may be useless on a lot of airlines.
The Tab S series doesn't include the $25 Google Play credit... Though the Tab Pro series does. Last edited by bobstro; 07-24-2014 at 07:47 AM. |

Live chatted with Samsung and apparently the warranty is US only. I suspected as much when I asked in a local (Greece) store and found out the provided 1-year warranty is "European". So I'll probably chose the slightly more mature (and definitely cheaper) Pro series. And I'll save some additional by ordering from Amazon. I'll use the $25 Google Play + 3 free audio books perks. Brings the 8.4" to about $300. I saw the Pro 10.1" today in a store and it is an excellent screen.
Thank you everyone for the assistance and suggestions! Last edited by rgeorg; 07-24-2014 at 09:26 AM. |

Just in case you are getting it, the official Samsung cover is very well built and adds next to no bulk to the device, but having owned it I would not get it again because the part that covers the screen does not have any way to stick to the screen and stay closed.
The 10.1 supposedly has a slightly better screen, but my eyes couldn't tell the difference. |

I can't even make out a huge difference between the hi-res LCD and the AMOLED screens - they both look great! There are some less expensive options for cases on Amazon, like the "IVSO Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 Ultra Lightweight Slim Smart Cover Case with Auto Sleep/Wake Function" for about $10 and free shipping. Seems to have pretty good reviews (4 stars). I'll also get the Amazon Basics travel case for extra protection while transporting. And a 64GB mSD card. And perhaps a bluetooth keyboard....hmmmm what else?
I like the idea of a larger screen, but I have really small hands and even my 9.7" Kindle DXG, which is heavier, is uncomfortable to hold while reading for long times. I only use the 6" reader. So, I am leaning towards the 8.4" even though magazines will require zooming in to read. |

My understanding is that AMOLED displays don't consume power for black pixels, so battery life might be better. I compared the Tabs side-by-side at Best Buy the other night. The AMOLED look great, but the resolution makes the biggest difference in readability indoors. I've also read that the AMOLED should be better outdoors, but I doubt they're up to competing with the Arizona sun!
The Pro series are cheaper, and have a somewhat stronger perks bundle. |

I'm a fan of the Roocase cases. They have flip and zippered portfolio versions. Both provide an internal "bikini" cover that can be removed from the bulky outer case for use around the house.
I've used Roocase covers for years and have never been disappointed. |

Seems I have a bit more research into cases to do! Thank you all for the suggestions.
I also wold never attempt to even go out in the strong Greek sun (rival to Arizona, certainly), never mind use a tablet. So yes, the resolution would make the screens pretty much even. My eyes cannot really make out much of a difference. In my mind, the main advantage of the pro series would be the maturity of the line, being out 5-6 months makes it a bit less of a risk for me, and a bit less expensive. I have to bring it to Europe for the next few months so it will be out-of-warranty area. I have contacted Samsung to see if I can get an international warranty, so far no. The gifts are not a big deal for me - I'll use the Google Play credit + the audio books - although they are not something I'd generally pay for, so it's not really money saved. |

The S line doesn't get all of the perks that the pro line gets. The S line only gets the free gogo, 3 months of audible, 3 months of Sirius fm and six months of stitcher.

Just a heads up, the tab pro 8.4 is 280 on bestbuy today, with free shipping (i'm sure in store pickup as well). Also just to mess with you, the Nvidia shield tablet looks awesome! http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/07...-satisfaction/ Last edited by Catire; 07-29-2014 at 09:27 AM. |

That gave me time to think... I decided that I did really want the new AMOLED screen, so it's back to the "S" series. I'll get it from Amazon and test it out right away. I have a Amazon prime month so I can wait till next week to order it. I'm not a "power user" in any case. Comments are 4.6/5 excellent, so I hope for the best. I am not even LOOKING at any other choices!!! But I appreciate your help and suggestions ![]() |

Hmmm, looks like the $25 Google Play credit perk went away on the S series. Too bad.

Hi, new user here.
I have the Tab S. In fact, I bought it more or less exclusively because of the benefits of reading with an Amoled screen (I previously had the Pro model) Since I do most of my reading in the dark with my wife sleeping beside me, I have always longed for someone to release a high resolution amoled tablet. IMO, there is no beating reading a book on an amoled screen. You chose a completely black background with a font color of your choice. (Mine is dark green) And lo and behold, the text is hovering in the air. No background light, light bleeding, no borders, no nothing. IMO it is a captivating experience and easily the best eReader there is. And I've tried them all. This is of course my experience, I guess some people might find this type of reading to be a bit too sleep inducing. :-) If anyone have any questions about the tab s feel free to ask. |
