I guess color is very important in those books so you'll need a tablet and if you prefer eink to lcd (because of eyestrain or reading outdoors a lot) then you can read those b/w parts simultaneously on some 10" eink reader.

Tablet is also handy solution if our eink is not fast enough for our liking at scribbling, highlighting, searching, multitasking tasks, dictionaries etc.

If price is important to us we can get used tablet(e.g. ipad 3/4) and eink (e.g. Kindle DX with installed KPV app) or we can go for lighter (e.g. iPad Air) or smaller (iPad mini) tablet if weight/dimension is important.

Maybe not directly like Onyx M92, t68 etc. but we can install 3rd party apps like KPV on Kindle DX after rooting/jailbreaking.

Solution lies in conversion to epub/mobi (e.g. using Calibre) or to pdf if we want to scribble on it or we are proud owner of DPT-S1.

Try this one: Dell Venue 8 Pro $250

This is a great little device that weighs less than a pound (0.87lbs) and has an 8" IPS display (1280x800) and runs the full version of Windows 8.1 Pro...not RT. It has 32GB of memory and you can add a 64GB micro SD card.

Throw in a little $5 program called Start 8 from Stardock and you have essentially reproduced your desktop computer in an 8" package.

I have this Dell and I love it for PDFs as well as MS Office documents. Adobe Reader is fantastic on it and as for CHMs simply use whatever you are now using on your desktop or one of the open source alternatives.

BTW, the USB port is OTG capable, meaning that you can read USB sticks.

I also have a Nokia 1520 that I use for epubs and between these two devices I almost never pick up my Kobo Aura HD or my Kindle.

The only drawback is, as always, battery life but I can get a full day's use of the Dell since I don't have it "on" all day. The 1520 can give me two days on a full battery.

I prefer e ink readers for there eye friendly and battery life features.
Kindle DX is not a touch device, with its drawback in annotations and dictionary lookup with not a crisp screen.

I read medical textbooks on the iPad using the Goodreader app. My 0.2 cents -> Forget e-ink for medical textbooks. Too slow to read, too slow to annotate, and only monochrome. I will also have to disagree with the suggestion of an 8 inch tablet; it's too small for medical textbooks. The iPad with it's 10 inch screen is barely sufficient, and I'd jump all over the rumoured 13 incher if they did release it.

What about Galaxy tab S or Kindle fire HDX or Nexus 10?

Yeah, any tablet 10 inch or greater should do. But I'd still lean towards the iPad because of the 4:3 screen ratio, which more closely approximates the dimensions of a textbook page. And the retina display doesn't hurt either. Most of the other tablets are 16:9 which would lead to more wasted space with a PDF. I don't know if a 12 or 13 inch tablet in 16:9 can compensate for that. It's an easy enough calculation to make, I guess; but I gave up all mathematical ability the moment I left school

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the Sony DPT S1. Its e-ink screen is 8 1/2 by 11 inches. It supports annotation of PDFs. The only downsides are that it does not support CHM, and is not in color. If color is not an issue, then it would certainly be a solution for your PDF files.

If you must have color, then I would recommend an i-pad or Samsung Galaxy 12.2. The color e-ink screens sacrifice resolution for color. The main consumer product with a color e-ink screen is the Ectaco Jetbook Color.
