Chi, it is certainly worth trying to update iOS to whatever the latest it will accept. One of the changes over time was improvement in how web pages are "rendered" in Safari, usually making the process somehow faster on the same hardware.

As long as we've drifted into iPad advice: my mom has a iPad 2 (one of my sister's handmedowns). I read horror stories of the poor performance and battery life with iOS 7 on the 2 so I'm keeping her on 6. Yes? Or should I upgrade it? |

My father-in-law is still using the iPad 1 I gave him a few years ago. He hasn't mentioned any issues with the browser, and he is always using the thing (and he would tell me if there was a problem, I'd be expected to fix it).

Still using my old iPad2. Runs iOS7 with no battery issues at all and though it can have a sluggish moment loading an app, it performs really well. I want to upgrade, but with the iPad2 working so well, it is hard to justify making the upgrade step. |

But if I reset it to factory defaults will I lose all my bookmarks or are they backed up in the cloud while syncing? That's why I didn't do it yet. I tried other browsers, still crashes. Now with apps updated if I load them again after reset they may not work at all anymore. R.I.P I think. Touchscreen goes crazy. Sometimes the whole image shakes about, buttons lit up like possessed, keyboard when typing puts letters on its own. Links and pictures I was far from touching suddenly load. There are days when I have to restart it at least once a day. This short answer I had to correct in 3 places. Drives me nuts.

I'm late to the thread, but going back to the original question, I think tablet sales are down for Samsung too, so the high end tablets are getting hurt by the mid ends, not to mention the cheapie ones. I have an iPad 3 that I bought for $500 and a used nook hd+ for $120. The iPad is nicer and it's what I use 95% of the time although functionally they're arguably about the same. I would not pay for a nicer Android tablet because it'll just be a faster version of my nook hd+, which already has Kit Kat and 1080p screen and an SD slot. I don't use it much because 1/ I don't like the 16:10 screen (16:9 is even worse). 2/ while the big major apps are more or less the same on both platforms, the smaller third party apps are generally more polished on is. For ex, I consume web content mainly via RSS and I don't find anything as good as Mr Reader on Android. 3/ everything looks generally nicer to my eyes on ios, probably because the apps are designed to be pixel perfect. Also, I think the android fonts are kind of ugly. Helvetica may be a boring choice, but it's a classic for a reason. Sorry, I digress. Point is, I don't want to pay for a nicer iPad either, because it'll just be a faster version of what I have now. Sure I took a bit of a performance hit when upgrading from ios 6 to 7, but once I turned off the fancy animation, it's running fine. Maybe ios 8 will run too slow, in which case I just won't install the upgrade. The battery life is still fine. I can still go a couple of days before a charge. Sure thinner and lighter is nice, but I'm not trying to hold it in one hand like I do my kindle. In fact, the weight may make it easier for me to handle because it stays put and does not slide around. I think that's why ipad and high end tablet sales are down. At this point, most people who want one already have one and it's doing what they want/need it to. Upgrade cycle for tablets falls somewhere between those for PCs and smart phones. Apple can expect to have a nice bump when they put out bigger iPhones, but eventually growth will flatten out too. Smart phones do have the advantage of carrier subsidies so people are more inclined to upgrade. Last edited by Barty; 08-03-2014 at 10:30 PM. |

There was an article on engadget (or similar) some days ago that said that PC are selling more. That could also be an explanation. People do not have money to buy both a new PC and a new tablet.

My first tablet with an iPad 2, but I eventually made the switch to Android and picked up a Nexus 7 (2013). Tablets are evolving so fast, and while I can justify €250-300 every 12-18 months for the latest and newest to satisfy the Inner Geek, the €600 that Apple wants (while also locking me in) is more than I'm comfortable with. One of the iPad models became "last gen" in less than a year even. But that aside, I just prefer the greater freedom of Android in general (plug it in my laptop to shuffle files around, code a small app and put it on the device without any hassle, switch manufacturers, greater variety in terms of features/sizes, etc.). |

Edit: Resell? Resale? Even reading the dictionary I can't seem to decide which is right here. I'm settling on resell. :-) Last edited by twowheels; 08-05-2014 at 01:44 PM.
