I think Amazon blew it this time. Time will tell.

Why the Moto-Nexus range? It may consumer friendly, but it may not be manufacturer and phone-market innovation friendly.

Because it won't sell otherwise. I see major fail looming on the horizon for this phone.

Pricing is just one factor in success or lack of it.

It might have failed with Moto-Nexus range pricing too -- and it may succeed at the high-end pricing.

Consumers seem to like having their choice these days, and it's sometimes difficult to make sense of why they're choosing what they choose.

In terms of hardware, Google, Microsoft, Sony, Apple and Samsung have all made mistakes -- is Amazon really exempt? I tend to agree with Tubemonkey: this wasn't Bezo's best move. If success made major companies immune to error, then markets wouldn't change and stocks would never decline.

This might be a game changer: Democrats and Republicans in Congress just came together to pass legislation allowing mobile devices to be unlocked, and President Obama said he looks forward to signing it.

Not being locked down to At&T could be a big enticement to potential Fire Phone customers.

Unlocked is great, but only if the price is cut in half.

Being allowed to unlock doesn't change much.
Most of the phones sold will still be locked by contract. And the telcos can easily set it up so that you have to pay to unlock.

I realize that an unlocked phone is an entirely different thing from a phone running Cyanogenmod, but in terms of user control, won't this be good news for people who like to jailbreak their phones or unlock their bootloaders and install CFW? Knox made it impossible to revert to stock after installing CFW and the excuse was region fidelity. It sounds as though that practice might be superseded Stateside.

Even before the rules were changed it usually cost money for non-hackers to unlock phones. Making it legal by law simply gives the telcos incentive for tighter lockdown coupled with fee-based unlocking of their own measures.

New law? New revenue stream.

The price of the Fire phone seems pretty reasonable to me at $199 for the 32GB version. That's certainly not expensive for a Smartphone.

That price is subsidized. Unsubsidized, it's $650; and that's very expensive.

And since it bundles a year of Prime it works out to $99.

Maybe Amazon should have called it the Prime Phone to drive home the message; if you're not into Prime, it's not for you.

That is actually the standard price for an unlocked phone around here (Sweden). I paid around $650 for my Nexus 4. The newest Samsung model will cost over $700 unlocked.

Google are now selling Nexus 5 and they are only $450.

The 16GB Nexus 5 is currently selling for $349.00, the 32GB is $399.00 and the white 16GB is out of stock. Could a new model be on the horizon?
