Thanks for your help. I hope some others will learn from my mistakes. ![]() As the advised tweaking of the font.hinting.mode brought no discernible change for emboldening, I realized that there should be another reason: my mistake was that I had kept the the "embedded style" ON while I was using a side-loaded font... Now, when I select "embedded style": OFF, I got these results for "regular" and "bold (see screenshots) using my side-loaded font. The emboldening looks a little too strong. Such a setting cannot probably be kept for a whole book. It would be precious if the user could have some control over it (like for frontlight levels). Edit: screenshots taken with font.hinting.mode left to 2. Last edited by roger64; 07-26-2014 at 02:26 AM. Reason: note |

@roger64: Unrelated. Hinting mode is honored no matter what the CSS used
![]() Still convinced it's the hinting, check again. (It's not a setting you can change while KOReader is running, AFAICT). Alternatively: what's the font (w/ a link if it's licensed appropriately)? |

And the bold, I'm hoping
![]() Well, apparently, it's just *that* bold, and in fact, the lightest rendering mode is the autohinter. EDIT: Haha! It's that bold, because there's also a SemiBold weight ![]() Which ones are you using? (If you're *not* using any of the bold variants, the boldening will be synthetic, and that's also usually ends up being *very* bold). Last edited by NiLuJe; 07-26-2014 at 05:32 PM. |

So, I intently side-loaded only the regular and italic fonts and got a -synthetic- slightly bolder display that I could use for standard reading. I lost it recently and I am at a loss to find it again. Maybe there will be a way to tune this "synthetic" boldening? Last edited by roger64; 07-27-2014 at 02:24 AM. |

@roger64: I'm not quite sure how the synthetic bolding is happening exactly since we're not using Fontconfig, but the change in behavior is probably due to the FreeType upgrade.
The synthetic stuff was never part of the 'proper' API, and thus is subject to silent changes (even more so than the rest, which is of course also subject to change in how stuff renders ;p). It was also utterly broken for a while for example. Try using the SemiBold (although I'm not sure if it'll get picked up properly, given that we're not using FC), or stay with regular and push the contrast to the max. Or tweak the font in a font editor to tweak the weight. It's open source, so you have pristine source material to work with. Last edited by NiLuJe; 07-27-2014 at 12:52 PM. |

@roger64: Hmm, which 'Bold' menu are you talking about exactly? The one I'm thinking of is the one inside the reader (at the bottom, with the font size & co).

@NiLuJe
yes, at the bottom of the page, where the user can select between "regular" or "bold". |

@roger64: Right, that's the one I was thinking of then, so what I mentioned earlier holds

@NiLuJe
As I failed to find a solution, I reverted to this nightly. It provides a nightmode and -for me- a light boldening of the font good for sustained reading. It's a trade-off, I lose the hyphenation selection and the screenshots (among others)... So I cannot give you a screenshot. Last edited by roger64; 08-01-2014 at 11:31 AM. |

@roger64: CRE's code is a bit murky to follow, but I'm not convinced it's actually doing anything synthetic at all in that case. I'm pretty sure it just goes and search for the font most closely matching a default 'bold' weight in the selected family.
No idea how well it deals with irregular weights, like Demi/SemiBold though. |
