But he soon realises the club’s sex-obsessed and brutish owner, Ruben Linskey, and his nephew, Terence, are hiding something sinister.
He overhears Ruben having a violent argument with his stripper girlfriend, Glory.
Out of revenge Glory steals Ruben’s mother’s urn and holds it at ransom for twenty-five grand.

No Cure for Murder (Brier Hospital Book 2) by Lawrence Gold
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006N0LSNY/

Quote:
Publication Date: December 16, 2011
Death at Brier Hospital is routine and provides the perfect opportunity to murder and get away with it. Jacob Weizman, a physician, and his wife, Lola, a psychotherapist, are holocaust survivors and need no proof of evil in this world. Jacob and Lola are unique protagonists. They’re octogenarians who take the fear out of getting old. Their intelligence, competence, humor, and sense of history make them appealing in a world that too often disdains the aged. After fifty-five years practicing medicine, Jacob is disappointed, but not surprised by several patients’ deaths, even the unexpected ones. Soon, however, it becomes clear that a killer is stalking the halls of Brier Hospital targeting Jacob’s patients. While Jacob has made enemies over the years, he finds it inconceivable that anyone would murder his patients for revenge. The killings mount even as the hospital and police increase security and pursue a vigorous investigation. Finally, unsatisfied with surrogates, the killer targets Jacob.

Indie book on sale for .99 on Amazon - WWII era London - read this one last year and definitely recommend:

Princes Gate by Mark Ellis

http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B...cm_cd_asin_lnk

When a brilliant emigré scientist is killed by a hit and run driver and a young woman’s body is washed up in the Thames, Merlin and his team must investigate. The woman is an employee of the American Embassy, whose Ambassador at this time is Joseph Kennedy.

DCI Merlin’s investigation of diplomats at the Embassy ruffles feathers at the Foreign Office – the American Ambassador is a well-known supporter of appeasement and many powerful and influential Britons favour the pursuit of a negotiated peace settlement with Hitler.

The death of another Embassy employee leads Merlin into some of the seedier quarters of wartime London where a corrupt night-club owner, various high-flying diplomats and the Ambassador himself appear to be linked to the events surrounding the deaths.

Merlin has to pursue his detective work under the interfering supervision of an Assistant Metropolitan Commissioner who is fearful about the impact of Merlin’s investigations on Anglo-American relations at a time when America represents to many Britain’s only hope of salvation.

Capturing the atmosphere of Britain in 1940 during the ‘phoney war’ when, although war rages on the Continent, life continues relatively peacefully in Britain, Princes Gate is an enthralling detective novel.

Deadly Aim by Patricia Rushford is free today at your favorite retailers. B&N link below.

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dead...=9781441239433

Quote:
Patricia Rushford kicks off a thrilling new crime series set in the cozy coastal hamlet of Sunset Cove, Oregon. Featuring determined police officer Angel Delaney, the first episode is sure to have armchair sleuths turning the pages as fast as they can to discover whodunit?
When a police shootout results in the death of a 12-year-old boy, Officer Angel Delaney is blamed, convicted, and condemned by the media and the Sunset Cove community before the case even goes to trial.
Angel will have her day in court, but before she has the chance to defend herself, the situation spirals out of control. Key evidence is missing, evidence that could have verified her claim of firing only one shot in self-defense. In short order, the body count rises, and suddenly Angel is a suspect in more than one murder investigation. Heartsick about the young boy's death, and questioning her judgment as a police officer, Angel joins forces with Detective Callen Riley to fight the mounting charges against her.

A Pedigree to Die For (Melanie Travis #1) by Laurien Berenson. Today's Nook Free Friday selection is a cozy first published by Kensington in 2004.
Goodreads

Quote:
Schoolteacher Melanie Travis turns PI to find a prized poodle that went missing after its owner died of an apparent heart attack while working in the kennel. In the course of the probe she comes across romance, murder and a great deal of dog lore, including breeding, handling, showing and judging.

Sacrifices by Roger Smith

Quote:
Just another murder in a country where killing is a national pastime . . .

Wealth insulates Michael Lane and his family from South Africa's violent crime epidemic until trouble comes from within the high walls of their Cape Town mansion one night when his teenage son commits an act of unspeakable savagery. Lane, joining his wife in a desperate lie to protect their boy (a lie involving the sacrifice of an innocent) encounters no opposition from cops and courts burdened by chaos and corruption, but he sets in motion a bloody train of revenge and retribution that threatens to destroy him and everything he loves.

Praise for Sacrifices

"Roger Smith is the crime genre's greatest tragedian and Sacrifices might just be his masterpiece. The downfall of these characters is especially Shakespearean." Peter Dragovich - Spinetingler Magazine

"Perceptive, bloody and gut-wrenching. Another brilliantly crafted piece of noir from Roger Smith." CrimeFictionLover.com

"Compulsive reading. Smith plots his tale with a master's hand, ensnaring the reader, drawing them in and enhancing his growing reputation as one of the best thriller writers around." Martin Stanley - The Gamblers Blog

"Through Smith's eyes, South Africa becomes a noir dystopia where life is cheap and tragedy spares no one. His bleakest, most twisted and very best novel yet." Benoit Lelievre - Dead End Follies

This is very possibly the worst formatted book it has ever been my misfortune to encounter, and is a perfect illustration of why we do not encourage the inclusion of independently-published books. Mort - take note, please!

The book jumps from "Chapter 1" to "Chapter 3", but it's so badly written that I can't decide whether the chapters are simply misnumbered, or if the incompetent editor (if it has been edited at all, which I doubt) has missed out Chapter 2.

At "Free" it's way over-priced. Don't waste your time!
