Whatever they do I just hope it fits in the same case. I don't mind buying the new device, but I am picky about cases and want to use my expensive one for as long as possible.

Thanks for that. I've just sent an email to Amazon UK telling them that I believe that the PW2 now ships with 4GB instead of the measly 2GB my bought-on-release-day PW2 came with and that if this is indeed the case, then I am obviously disappointed at being stuck with a lower-spec device on which I am rapidly running out of storage space; and that I will therefore carefully consider any future device purchase. Let's see if they offer to swap out for a 4GB PW2

Why are you disappointed? You knew the specification of the device when you bought it, and you got the device as specified. You really can't complain about the fact that a device with a different specification has been released AFTER you bought yours.

I am disappointed because it looks like they quietly upgraded the memory within the same release year - it's not a new model. If this had been touted as the "new, new Kindle" - aka PW3 - then things would have been completely different. Puts me off buying a new device at or soon after release if they do those kinds of upgrades towards the end of the cycle.

FWIW I had sent feedback after buying the PW and PW2 that 2GB was way to small, especially given that the K3 I owned before that had 4GB.

I still do not believe that this gives you any legitimate reason to complain. You have received the product that was advertised, as it was specified.

I am not complaining, I am just disappointed

which is slightly different. I didn't ask them for anything, and sent the email as feedback. But I certainly will be waiting towards the end of the release cycle to purchase my next device (whatever that may be)

Edit: Funnily enough, the PW2 specs on Amazon UK no longer show the actual memory size, and just say "On device storage: Holds over 1,000 books" instead in the Technical Details

And Amazon UK CS have just got back to me by email, missing the point completely, and kindly explained how I could manage my content to free up space on my device

They rep has confirmed that 4GB memory is a new feature of the devices currently sold . I just find it strange that it's not officially listed anywhere in the specs, and obviously there has been no announcement of a new model. So yeah, if they're going to do those kinds of improvements silently and late into the release cycle then I won't be buying any future model in a hurry then.

@Yolina: If it makes you feel any better, I'm fairly convinced it wasn't really planned, given the info we dug out of 5.4.0 in our original jailbreaking efforts... (And as demonstrated by these new devices being incapable of running official Kindlets until they fixed the oversight in 5.4.5).

So you're saying that they kinda "accidentally" chucked 4GB in those PW2s, and then realised that the FW wasn't quite working with it after they started shipping them? If so, way to go Amazon

Edit: and I'm still annoyed with them

I'd be willing to put money on the fact that they either got overstocked on their own inventory of 4GB memory (maybe the Japanese version PW didn't sell as many as they figured it was going to) or got a better deal from a supplier on the 4 GB memory than they could get on a 2 GB so they started putting in 4 GB. Since they likely didn't want to open all the existing PW's, built or in supply chain, and replace the 2 GB with 4 GB they currently don't pin themselves down to what's in it.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Kobo switched from 2GB internal SD card to a 4GB mid-life on one of their devices. They didn't change the firmware, so until someone opened one up and discovered the bigger SD card no one knew there was any difference (still showed up as having 2GB memory). Those with a bit of tech know how could play with things and reformat the memory to allow access to the whole thing. The majority of users likely have no idea they have anything other than 2GB in the device. They also have gone from SD card to on board memory one time mid-model. If you wanted to put your own bigger memory card for internal memory you're out of luck, but they are still selling you the same device.
You can wait till the end of lifecycle to buy next time, but it's luck/outside market factors that will determine if it works out for you.

I'm looking for a merger of the HDX and PW to a PDX 2014 - one unit at 150% of the price of the present HDX. Amazon badly needs additional profits and this kind of price would help.

It should have a color eInk screen and full tablet capabilities with camera lenses front and back. It will probably have a customized version of Android.

It should come with 64 Gb standard storage.

It may even have phone capabilities as one of its variants.

It will probably come with a 5.1" screen to be able to carry it in a trousers pocket with a different model at 7.5" to fit a woman's pocketbook.

I wouldn't expect it to be released for preorder until November to build up the demand as October passes without any announcements.

That kind of model would put Amazon way ahead of Apple in hardware uniqueness.

The title of this thread is wild guess so that's mine.
