Just finished reading "Hell's Foundations: A Social History of the Town of Bury in the Aftermath of the Gallipoli Campaign" by Geoffrey Moorhouse. Glad to finally get this one of my TBR, and sorry I hadn't read it sooner.

During lunch I finished reading Heavenly Pleasures by Kerry Greenwood. Next up are Torch of Freedom by David Weber and Eric Flint and U is for Undertow by Sue Grafton. I need to load Torch of Freedom onto my Kindle.

I am probably going to take a break from the shorter novella and have a kitkat before I start on Tad William's The Dirty Streets of Heaven next. It looks interesting from the preview and hope the rest of it is as well. If I like it enough, I might add the rest of the books to my next month Kobo contest wishlist.

Another novel-with-prequel-novella in my stack is Dorothy Must Die, which caught my eye thanks to a physical four-chapter free sampler in a local bookstore. Naturally, it's a gritty sequel to... either the Oz books or the movie; I'm not clear on that offhand. Either way, it looks neat, but it's not jumping ahead of some good Butchery.

It was indeed very good. It's not necessary to read Saturn's Children beforehand. Recommended.

Next I went to read my earliest unread InterZone only to find I'd read it. So I quickly moved on to Asimov's SF, September 2014 edited by Sheila Williams. I found one of the longer stories unreadable, but it was brought up to average overall by some excellent shorter works.

I then read Harvest Moon by Mercedes Lackey and two others. Three excellent Novellas. Very enjoyable fantasies.

And now I'm reading The Reluctant Swordsman by Dave Duncan, one of the recent Humble Bundle.

(And in case anyone's wondering about the sudden rush of books finished, I accidentally missed my stop on the train, and because of train timings and delays I had an extra four hours of reading yesterday.... a very good reason to take an ebook reader instead of a paperback!)

After all I'd seen here I decided to read Storm Front last night. It was quite fun and I'll certainly read more of the Dresden books.

I just finished a marathon reading of books 1-4 in the Malazan, Book of the Fallen. Very good (and long!) epic fantasy but rather grim so I need a break.

I have just stared Fool's Errand, book 1 of Robin Hobb's Tawny Man Trilogy. It's good to check back in with Fitz and the Fool.

Last night I finished "Sentry Peak" by Harry Turtledove, the first book in his "War Between the Provinces" trilogy. I bought this from Baen in September 2000.

This is an "alternate history" (Turtledove's speciality) fantasy retelling of the American Civil War with, in this case, the kingdom having been split by the new King's proclamation freeing the "blond" serfs from the estates of the nobles, and the North of the country declaring independence as a result. Army officers ride unicorns (!) and battles are conducted with crossbows, pikes, catapults, and magic, with armies being transported on "glideways" (magic carpets which travel along fixed routes).

Very good indeed. I've read it before, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
