That is all fair and well. The reason there is a free trial is so that a certain small percentage of trial users will keep it, even when they never intended to keep it after initially.

If you read alot, and the selection is big enough for you, then KU looks like a real nice platform. Not having to deal with a traditional style library waiting list may be an advantage as well.

I can see where KU would have value for some. But for me, it doesn't. I'm very satisfied with the libraries I belong to. They have large selections and waits aren't that bad when I'm on multiple lists.

You are only ruining it for everybody else - and not only you, Fbone, but everybody else as well.
Thinking about it I suppose you are correct but I wouldn't call it "pirating" exactly. I still would be paying for each book. Keeping the subscription month after month but only replacing about 4 or 5 titles each month (as would be my case) seems foolish if the alternative is available and is legal.

I don't think it's piracy, but it's certainly "gaming the system".

Going through 54 pages of "science fiction romance" in the KU sort, I have found quite a few that look really good. But now, nearing the end of the pages, finding French, German and Spanish editions. Huh? So the last 10 pages are completely useless.

I hate Amazon sorting.

They may be useless to you, but I'm sure they aren't useless to those who speak French, German or Spanish. An awful lot of people in the US speak Spanish, I believe?

Certainly, but shouldn't they be listed separately from English editions? Why do the Germans need to go through 46 pages of English books to find one or two in German?

I signed up for the free trial and while I could probably find enough to warrant the $10 a month (I have been meaning to re-read the Harry Potter series now for a couple of years). The 10 book limit is a show stopper for me - though I get why Amazon is doing it.

I am the kind of guy that likes to build up and, every now and then, peruse my library (I use ios app). Obviously a 10 book limit puts a bit of a damper on doing this.

Sure, after reading a given book, I could strip the drm and sideload it, but not sure how I feel about that (even if I am continue paying for the service).

Plus, I have grown to really like the xray and real page number functionality, not sure I'd want to be without it if I ever decided to reread one of the books. Though I guess I could just 're-borrow' the book.

The 10 book limit isn't really a limit. Unless you can't access the web store. Just browse through the list, pick a book. If you have more than 10 "out" it will ask you which one to replace.

Even if you are reading more than 10 books simultaneously, I expect your last read location will be remembered. (I could be wrong about this).

The overdrive app for my library allows me to borrow up to 20 digital items, for free. Max loan period of 3 weeks. I can return anytime I like and borrow more, as long as my title list is no bigger than 20. For free. If I didn't have the access to this, I'd consider Amazon.

I usually only read 1 book at at time. My issue is, I like to have a collection (or bookshelf) of books that I have read - so I can just look over them (covers) from time to time. I am assuming the ios app will only display up to 10 books in my library at at time.

I guess I should check this out. There is a 'in cloud' vs. 'on device' toggle in the app. Maybe all of them will appear in the cloud, but only let me have 10 on the device at a time.

I did the free trial for 30 days. I think I may keep the service. I have found quite a few books on there that caught my interest. I'm not a big rereader of most of my books. Every now and then, I find one that I would like to reread at some point. When that happens again, I'll buy that particular book.

You would imagine that Amazon will have simply some kind of limit on how many times per year people can sign up/cancel a subscription. Or am I missing something?

So, I just tried 'borrowing' more than 10 books. Yes, does not let you - asks you to return one first. So no way to keep a read book in your library once you get beyond 10. Bummer for me.
