I would suspect from the error that either you have connection issues somewhere between you and ffnet, or ffnet has started blocking you.

I've been experiencing an odd problem with this plugin for the last week or so (not sure when it started)

downloading stories from http://www.storiesonline.net

about 1 in 5 stories are giving me the following:

Status: Bad
Title: Arlene and Jeff
Author: RoustWriter
Comment: HTTP Error 401: Unauthorized
URL: http://storiesonline.net/s/50474

I would consider it a password or a login issue, EXCEPT I'm getting Good status from other stories on the site.

did something change in a recent update to affect this?

repeated tries on downloading the failed stories returns the exact same response, while repeated tries on downloading the successful stories returns success every time...

fathertyme: It looks like something has changed on the site. The response when you are not logged in for some stories is different. I'll have a look at it.

Attached is a version of FFDL that fixes the problem with storiesonline. It seems that for some stories, the site now rejects the attempt to retrieve the story with a 401 error. I don't have a pattern for when this happens, but the message also says there is no preview available. The fix will handle this plus the other ways the site shows the need to login.

JimmXinu: while testing this I found a problem with the config dialog and the Qt5 changes. There were some conversions from Qt types that needed to be handled properly for Qt4 and Qt5.

Do you know if I can add more than one separate category? When I'm downloading a Crossover fic, I would like the stories to be under both fandoms or categories.

I've already added the following: add_genre_when_multi_category: Crossover

If the story lists more than one category on the originating site, FFDL should be listing all of them in the category metadata.

Here's a test version that incorporates davidfor's fixes for storiesonline, some corrections for qt5 porting, changes default encoding for bloodshedverse.com to Windows-1252, and addresses an issue with Updated date and fimf stories that don't have any chapters.

When I try to download stories from the following page: https://www.fanfiction.net/Dharma-Gr...2/?&srt=1&r=10, it only shows up in category as: Criminal Minds, Dharma & Greg ... but not under the separate tags like Criminal Minds and Dharma & Greg.

I'm not sure what you're doing, but d/l'ing a couple of those definitely gets both category values 'Dharma & Greg' and 'Criminal Minds' for me. And they appear in Tags when category is configured to do so.

I suspect that you're not including category in tags (include_subject_tags parameter in personal.ini) or your replace_metadata or in/exclude_metadata settings are not set as you truly intend.

I have a separate category, called Fandom where they end up, but it doesn't recognise them as separate, it only makes one category called Criminal Minds, Dharma & Greg. And then they don't show up in neither the Criminal Minds VL or the Dharma & Greg VL.

There are two related problems with this build.

Firstly, it looks like I uploaded the wrong version last night. It didn't have the fixes for the config dialog and Qt4/5 that I meant to put in. The places that you removed the ".toString()" from need to be converted by "convert_qvariant". Without this, it works OK in the Qt5 version, but you lose the settings from the drop-down lists in the Qt4 version.

I also saw the following error:

calibre, version 1.202.0
ERROR: Cannot generate cover: No cover settings exist named: "None"

This looks to be caused by the above problem. The Qt4 version wrote "None" as the setting for all the drop-downs. Then using the same library with the Qt5 version read "None" and displayed the error. It should only affect someone who swaps between the calibre builds with exactly the wrong plugin versions.

I'm going to assume by separate category you actually mean a custom column called Fandom.
If that's the case how do you have the column setup?
Is it a "Text, column shown in tag browser" type of column? If so, then it will act exactly the way you described. It will fill in the fandoms as a single 'category' or 'tag'.
If you want them to be separate 'tags' then you need to create a "Comma separated text, like tags, shown in tag browser" type custom column. This will then list each comma separated item as an individual 'category' or 'tag'. It will also sort them alphabetically.
