I finished Joe Hill's "NOS4A2" today. It's hard not to compare it with Stephen King's "It" and "The Stand" especially when there are references to Derry, Shawshank and True Knot. One of the characters is nicknamed Gasmask Man and like The Stand's Trashcan Man utters the words "my life for you".

Although it's a long book, over 700 pages on my Kobo, it's a quick read. Definitely one of my favourites so far this year.

I finished Exit Strategy by Kelly Armstrong a day or so ago. Another Canadian author whose protagonist in this series is a Canadian hit woman. I like this sort of book (Max Alan Collins Quarry comes to mind).

Well written and the second one I have read. I might try her fantasy series as it is set in Canada as well.

Finished "The Glory of Their Times: The Story of the Early Days of Baseball Told by the Men Who Played It" by Lawrence Ritter. One of the best books I've read in years. Particularly liked the multiple viewpoints of some famous events in baseball, like the Merkle incident in the 1908 pennant race.

Kudos to GA Russell for the recommendation.

I'd guess he's up to the task. But do we get to see more of how he thinks and feels? What causes him to function the way he does? So far it's just 'dad died so I'll become a SEAL.'

I've finally finished reading Inamorata. The premis was quite interesting but it took 75% to 80% of the book to get to the interesting/exciting part. It seemed to me that it was a short story that had been padded and stretched into a novel.

There's a movie called The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants that's recently been playing on several of my cable movie channels. So I've decided to read the book it was based on, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Sisterhood #1) by Ann Brashares.

Yeah, I lost some sleep with it too. I can't believe I'm even reading a "zombie apocalypse" series, much less giving it a highly recommended! But I am.

You won't lose any sleep over the Amelia Peabody series, but I think you'll enjoy it nonetheless.

I do not usually read zombie books either. The last one is due out at the end of the year.

ANOTHER ONE? I was going to read them all in row as a trilogy, but if there's another coming, maybe I'll space them out a bit more. But I'll be sure to be ready for the new one! (checked Baen's schedule and Strands of Sorrow is in the January bundle.)

I don't expect the final book(or should I say the next) to be out by the end of the year. Apparently, there have been several rewrites, because John Ringo wasn't happy with it.

Abandoned after 90 pages. The writing was decent (a little stilted with the dialogue) and the author had a few interesting ideas. However, I disliked the main protagonist too much to continue. The author also seemingly failed to research the fields of virology and immunology. She made several errors that made the plot and subsequently the story implausible.


My library hold of City by Clifford Simak became available so on to that. Eagerly anticipated.

I went on a buying frenzy for all those cheaper novella with all those abundance of 65% discount codes from the Kobo Trivia contest going around. Currently starting on Matt Hilton's Dead Fall, to be followed by Matt Hilton's Red Stripes and Jason Dean's The Last Quarter. I have never read books from these two authors before but I've read somewhere that the stories seems similar to Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, so I suppose that the novellas will give me a taste of the writings before I "commit" to the full-length novels.

Just after I started reading Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (just 10% read), I received an email announcing the release of "Second Suicide: A Short Story by Hugh Howey". So I invested the 99 cents at Amazon and got a copy. It was well worth the minimal expense and the interruption to read it. In fact I'd like to see Hugh expand it into a novel.

Now back to Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants!
