After doing a factory reset on my aura HD this morning, and after it updated, I found I was still on 3.3. OK, it's a long long way to Canada, but still... thanks for the link and instructions for DIY. |

I suppose all books that are defined with a value "0" for these properties will be ignored and fall-back to the default value of 2. If you use these properties in your own books then I would change these values to 1 for all future books that need customization and leave the old books untouched and/or only make changes on a individual basis.

Before 3.5.0, any time I modified the font (including size) in a book, it was chosen also for all books open afterwards, but not to those opened previously. Now it applies to all books, which is very annoying: I have many books opened simultaneously, and it is very annoying to have to remember what suits every book best. I have many "complete works" which have their own requirements (notably poetry), and I might wish for a starker font when reading conditions are poor (or my eyes tired), without wanting it to apply to all. Does anyone know how to work around this? |

Yeah, I don't remember Kobo ever supporting per-book font settings except through the books' CSS sheets. The GUI has always been for global settings, to the best of my knowledge.

The per-book font settings (family, size, line-height, margins) are stored in the Kobo database's content_settings table. The font thickness/sharpness settings are stored (per-font-family, not per-book) in the .kobo/Kobo eReader.conf config file.

Not that per-book would be a bad thing to have, but it's inconsistent with the current interface.

and so if the database was corrupt, the per-book settings might not be loaded/saved, while the global settings would still be loaded/saved from the config file.

The font GUI is only available when in a book so it's always seemed implicit (to me) that it means "for this book". Of course, because the latest per-book settings are also stored globally in the config, they are also applied to all future books which don't yet have their own per-book settings. So I can see why people may get confused

On the couple of occasions I've had a corrupt database, my device has gone into a death-spiral quite quickly so I don't think I've experienced a partially-working Kobo for any length of time. Is this what you think is most-likely causing anacreon's problem?

It's the only thing I could think that would cause the effect anacreon saw, but I'm not going by experience, I've never had a corrupt database.

anacreon: Run a check on the database to see if it has any problems. You can do this from a SQLite manager, or the Kobo Utilities plugin in calibre.

Thank you all for your inputs. I've just checked the database with kobo utilities, and it is ok. @rev bob: the way it worked was perfect for me and needs no fix IMO. I have worked on Georgia for instance to make it blacker, and would not like to have to redo it every time I choose Georgia. Since everyone else has no problem, I might try a reset, but it is a long and painful process which I will wait to be back home to try. Also in other cases (wifi for instance), it didn't work for me. OTOH, I feel like it is not a bad thing to do now and then, just like defragmenting my computer, considering all the to and fro-ing I do. EDIT: I just checked on the aura 6" (I wouldn't go 3 weeks on holidays far away from a bookshop without a spare), and it is as before. I gather it is a problem on the HD, even though the data base checks ok. Definitely a case for a reset. Sorry not to have done this before - I learned things about the fonts management from Jackie_w though, and might try to save the config file. Last edited by anacreon; 07-19-2014 at 01:03 AM. |
