By The Author of “Elizabeth and Her German Garden” Elizabeth von Arnim [Mary Annette Beauchamp], Countess von Arnim, Countess Russell. (1866–1941) Macmillan and Co., London, 1921. A vulnerable young woman is swept off her feet by a strong, handsome man, whose wife has died in mysterious circumstances. They marry and she is taken to the house where the first wife died… Yes, the plot, so far, does sound similar to Daphne du Maurier’s “Rebecca” (not published until 1938). And, like “Rebecca” this novel is named after the dead wife. However, this novel turns into a very black comedy indeed; showing the dangers when a passive girl meets a totally self-centred man. I fear that you may be disappointed. I didn't notice any llamas. But you had better read it and see.

The husband in the novel is supposed to be based on Elizabeth von Arnim's second husband: Lord Frank Russell, the second Earl Russell. If so, he can't have been a very nice person. Actually, he almost certainly wasn't. He was known as the "wicked earl" and had been successfully prosecuted for bigamy in 1901. He died in 1931, and the earldom went to his younger brother, the philosopher Bertrand Russell (who continued the family tradition of marrying often; but kept to one wife at a time). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_R...d_Earl_Russell The earl was also famous for having Britain's very first car licence plate: A1. |
