Finished The Moonstone - that was excellent. Exactly what I needed and kept me guessing until pretty near the end. I agree with some that it is a little overlong - I could have done with fewer chapters from Miss Clack, for example - but it's still a fantastic novel.

Also polished off I Am Legend today, which was absolutely brutal. Fantastically written, but absolutely visceral in its bleakness. Definitely a good read but not one to crack open if you're feeling in the least down!
Spoiler:
I knew from the start that the dog dies, which made it a bit less sad. I hate animal deaths in books generally, as I often think it's a cheap way of playing on people's emotions, but in this I think it worked relatively well. The matter-of-fact nature of the prose helped.

Can't decide what to read now!

I'm finally getting to the last released book in the Song of Fire and Ice series by George R.R. Martin. I love the show and really want to get exposed to the story through the book before it airs on TV so that Internet spoilers don't affect me. So far it's worked!

I've just started "The Lions of Lucerne" (Scot Harvath #1) by Brad Thor, and while it's a quick and pleasant read, I'm afraid it lacks the depth of a John Sandford or Jeffery Deaver novel. I'm sure I'll finish the book, but not so sure I'll read the rest of the series. I had an into to his books with a teaser (that I was unaware was just a teaser,) a 20-page start of another of his books which made me decided to start at the beginning of the series, but there doesn't seem to be much more character development in this first book.

The Crime at Black Dudley is more the nothingth book in the series, as I understand it. Campion's a secondary character and is not really the same as in the rest of the series. The paperback's even later, from what I can see.

Delightful. Highly recommended, as are pretty much all of Wimsey books. I'm going to read through the whole list this year, but try to space them out a bit to make the pleasure last.

Next up, the new book in my one and only zombie series, Islands of Rage and Hope. Honestly, I do not do zombies, full stop, but this series is a complete guilty pleasure.

It's one of the few series I've read in which I honestly find myself caring about the characters in it, and what's going to happen to them. My two favourite books in the series are "Murder Must Advertise" and (especially) "Gaudy Night".

Finished Lauren Beukes' Broken Monsters over the weekend and loved it. It starts out like a vanilla crime thriller and really gets interesting once the supernatural aspects kicks in. Like The Shining Girls there are lots of things to think about and it messes with your mind quite a bit. I also enjoyed her observations on life in the internet age. If you liked The Shining Girls you'll definitely enjoy this too.

Both favourites. Though my favourites tend to change over time, it will be interesting to see which ones are a favourite this time. My favourite Ian Carmichael TV version was definitely Murder Must Advertise.

Finished Death of an Outsider on Tuesday and read the first 10 pages of The Martian. This evening I'm at page 164 and I'm thoroughly hooked. Really enjoying it and I'm so glad I saw it recommended here.

Well, that was fun. Ridiculous, but fun. On to another book from this month's Baen Bundle - Eight Million Gods. I read this when it originally released, but it was a loan, so I was glad to pick up a copy in the bundle. And it's time for a re-read.

My next read will be On the Fence by Kasie West. I hope this one won't involve suicide nor other sort of death.

Clearly set in the same magical universe, but otherwise it could be a stand-alone. An enjoyable fantasy.

That's my next one too, having just nabbed it with a Kobo coupon. I don't do horror, and I don't like gore, but this is just so over the top and the gore isn't too detailed.

I wish Ringo would do more in his Technofall series.

Hey, thanks for this! I just finished The Shining Girls and I didn't know anything about Beukes' other works. I'm pretty tempted to check this out! I liked The Shining Girls a lot, though there were some aspect I think could have been done better (thought the ending was a little abrupt).

Now reading Jane Eyre for about the millionth time... I never get tired of this book!

I'm currently reading the first book, Under a Graveyard Sky. It is indeed ridiculous, but fun and I am very much enjoying it.
