I can't update from 1.29 to 1.44.0 !

Hi !

I have been using and regularly updating Calibre since the beginning, without any problem, but yesterday I have tried to update, clicking on "Update found: 1.44.0".... and nothing happened !!! My PC didn't try to upload anything ! (BTW I regularly upload/download different kind of files without any problem!)

I then went to http://calibre-ebook.com/download and downloaded the latest (1.44.0) version for Windows. The file is 54.942 ko. I went thru the "Do you want to run the file?", then "Next". There I got a page that I saw, with "Change", "Repair", "Remove" !!! I don't know why... I don't have any problem with Calibre !?!

Well, I clicked on "Repair", then the program did its usual job right to the end. Eventually, when I clicked on the Caliber icon, it opened the program and..... it was still running version 1.29, and there was still the "Update found: 1.44.0" on screen !!!

What's going on ? What shall I do ? I have about 950 ebooks (epub and PDF) in my library... I don't want to risk losing them !

Please help....

TIA,
J-P.

Oooops ! My bad !

I goofed when "manually" downloading the software from http://calibre-ebook.com/download: I had clicked on WINDOWS and NOT on WINDOWS 64bits ! Now I corrected this and everything ran well !

Still........ why on earth didn't the software call/download the update when I clicked on "Update found: 1.44.0" ? I was indeed running a correct 64 bits version, so there must be "something" that prevented my PC to go to the download URL and do its job !!!

Any idea ?

When you click on "Update Found" in calibre, it opens a weblink to the download page. It does not download the update.

Repair is the clue that it thinks that version is already installed.
he version and OS is part of the installer filename

Yes I know that, thank you !

Meanwhile, it doesn't explain nor cure the problem of Calibre not opening the weblink !?!

Only thing I can think of is OS-level failure to properly handle links. Configuration is somehow off. Do other programs handle links properly?

You also said you updated calibre regularly but this was the first update in 15 versions. Let us know how it works for you later this week with the next version.

Operating systems do not normally see the HTTP links, the download agent such as a browser or download manager look after them.

Maybe the download failed, the previous download was lying around in the downloads folder, and some sort of automated process 'installed' it, hence the "Change", "Repair", "Remove".

Or the OP didn't download from the 'official site'. There's at least one other download location that has been known to deliver the wrong version. It had the right name, but the checksum was wrong and the Revision Number was for an earlier release - e.g. it said it was 1.34 but inside it was 1.32 1.37 but inside it was 1.36. Its in a thread in Devices somewhere - site name was something like FOSSwarehub.

Added : Here's that other thread Problem with Calibre 64 v 1.37 - Page 2

By "OS not recognizing links" I was thinking of the way there have been isolated incidents of xdg-open (on linux) getting badly configured and not passing the link properly to the browser. I myself have one system that still thinks Chrome is installed and tries and fails to pass all software links to it.

I was, after all, answering in reference to the calibre prompt not opening the download page.

Perhaps the Windows equivalent to xdg-open is suffering similar problems?

Thanks guys for the comments !

I don't know what happened, but now Calibre does show the correct 1.44.0 version, and seem to work allright !

I'll see what will happen when the next update shows....
