This. I might write it down so I can check it out once I'm home and behind my own pc.

Apparantly the kobo didn't get this feature. Or can I install ADE on a Kobo?

I assumed you couldn't install apps on a public computer. Can you even have 2 ADE installations under the same Adobe ID?

The basis of the question WAS that I don't understand DRM and ADE very well. I know I get encrypted books from kobo direct to the reader when I can get wifi working. I know I can get unencrypted books and load them sideways. But I don't know how to get non-kobo books that are DRM'ed. Especially if I'm travelling and haven't taken my desktop computer with me. Or how to change the Adobe ID to use someone elses ADE installation.

Thankyou.

Although its irrelevant to the question,
I dont have 1100 books, I could not name 1100 titles I wanted to read.

I think, if some digital rights agreement meant that ebooks could not be released until say, 10 years after the paper print, I'm sure the consensus would NOT be "stop this my-neighbour-has-such-nice-things-I-must-have-them-too"

And yes, when I said travelling I was thinking years. My son is in the 2nd year of his "round the world trip"

Just as an aside, do Internet Cafes have wifi or do you just have to plug into their computers?

If your son is traveling from country to country, he can, in advance, find out where free wifi is most commonly located. In the US, it's libraries and hospitals, although some restrict access to patrons or patients.

In that case, I'd buy an 8" windows tablet, install Calibre + extras on it, find a spot with wifi, buy the book, import in Calibre and put it on my reader from there.

Battery life isn't that important, as you'd have to charge your reader too once in a while. And turned off, a tablet doesn't use a lot of power either.

-----

As a matter of fact, we did something like that (but the other way around) our last holiday. We had bought a dashcam to record our trip across France and Spain. But as the SD card can only hold about 4 hours of film, we used our tablets to transfer the data to an external HDD. And if the tablet was running low on power, we'd plug it in the car cigaret thingie...

Tarana and Sweetpea,
Thanks for the kind suggestions but its not for him, he prefers print books.
With all his travelling and alone time he's read and disposed of a small library.

I was just putting myself in his situation and wondering how I would manage with an e-reader.

It's an interesting question, but there are a lot of additional details I'd want to consider:
  1. Will you be staying in hotels or out in the wilderness? Can you assume daily access to AC power, or will be out in the woods?
  2. How often will you be near "civilization" to charge up batteries, connect to wifi? Can you assume regular access to a Starbucks, McDonald's or other wifi-friendly location?
  3. How big a factor is weight? Are you tossing stuff in checked luggage or carrying it on your back?
  4. How do you feel about carrying multiple devices?
  5. How much of your valuable vacation time are you willing to spend downloading and converting books?
  • If you want to minimize weight and dependency on AC, I'd pick the eink reader with the broadest selection that suits your needs. No guarantees you'll find everything, but you can find plenty. Be sure you can actually buy books overseas. You still need wifi to buy books.
  • If you want maximum access to ebooks, and are OK with maybe a little more weight, a general-purpose tablet with all of major reading apps pre-loaded and authorized should work. The worst case scenario is finding a site (e.g. Entitle Books - recommended) that lets you download an .acsm file. These can be opened directly in Aldiko on an Android device and, assuming you have momentary wifi access, the actual DRM-encumbered .epub downloaded. An Onyx Boox T68 might give a good mix of portability, flexibility and battery life. You still need wifi to buy books.
  • If you want to be ready for anything, a combination of eink reader for battery life along with a laptop/tablet capable of running conversion software (e.g. Calibre) works, but makes regular access to power a bigger deal. You still need wifi to download books, unless you have a device with an RJ-45 Ethernet port.

A big part of the challenge seems to be network access. For that, a suitable phone with an international data plan and hotspot functionality might be simplest assuming you can get coverage where you plan to be.

For power, you can use a variety of high-capacity battery packs. The smaller your device's requirements, the further you can get between charges. There are options like solar panels or hand cranks if you'll really be out in the wilds.

If literally traveling for years, then my setup is the only one I'd go with. My ereader loaded with about 400 books, plus my netbook with my entire library on it, equipped with Calibre and Alf (as well as Sigil if away that long, I often feel the need to correct badly formatted books and spelling errors). This setup allows me to make purchases whenever I have wi-fi available through my netbook, keep it together on the netbook with the rest of my library (which is my preference), and sideload any purchases to my reader.

Yep, except I'd use a tablet instead of a netbook

A Windows8 tablet, I assume, right? Or does the combo of Calibre + Alf + Sigil work on iOS or Android?

No, it doesn't. Works great on Windows tablets, though, such as my Surface Pro.

I backpack. Kindle 3g. Samsung Note phone. One charger, two cables. Both work either WiFi or cellular. If abroad, I either use the Kindle or find a WiFi hotspot. I can wait if neither option works. It hasn't ever happened. I grab a prepaid sim card for the phone asap, but that's so I can book my accomodation when not camping. I carry a second battery for the phone.
