I agree that Leonard Cohen is KING! but of all versions I've heard of Hallelujah, K.D.'s is still my favourite.

Oh, I like K.D. a lot, just that I'm sort of stuck on Hallelujah being Leonards song, and no one else should really mess with it

oh yeah. leonard cohen makes me fall down on the floor with bliss. that voice...

and i agree, i've heard some decent other versions of hallelujah (john cale, jeff buckley...) but none of them comes close to his.

adding to the collection anyway... here's john cale's version. it's from the tribute album "i'm your fan".

Z, you stole my answer. I like John Cale's version a great deal. As a teen I played the original "Songs of Leonard Cohen" until all of the tracks were white on the album. I loved "Teachers", "Sisters of Mercy", and "The Stranger Song".

From his later work I rather liked "First We Take Manhattan". There was a great version of it on the "I'm Your Fan" tribute album performed by REM.

aaaah, first we take manhattan... brilliant song... and i agree, the rem version is excellent. actually that whole album is really great. i love the pixies version of "i can't forget", and no cohen tribute would be complete without nick cave (he covers "tower of song"). Avalanche IV by Jean-Louis Murat is brilliant too... i love his voice.

hm. i think i'll go listen to that entire album now.

one of my favorite cohen songs (apart from all the ones mentioned in this page so far, i mean...

) is Bird on the Wire :

and, obviously, i'm your man.

today is apparently Tribute Album Day (mar(k)(c) your calendars !). after "i'm your fan", we bring you "The Kills : I call it art (La chanson du slogan)" from the album Monsieur Gainsbourg revisited (also highly worthwhile).
