As soon as I finish Jack Campbell's The Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier: Steadfast (book 10 in the main line, book 12 in the overall series), I'm shoving everything else aside for Tom Holt's The Outsorcerer's Apprentice, the third in his "YouSpace" line (after Doughnut and When It's a Jar).

After that, and probably writing a couple or three more chapters in my own book along the way, it's a toss-up between Skin Game (Dresden Files) and Property of a Lady Faire (Secret Histories), followed by Tales of the Hidden World, a new Simon R. Green collection with at least one story each in the Nightside and Secret Histories series.

One of these years, I should probably go back and index Green's interlocking series as one monster set, so I can reread it in sequence without missing anything.

Clouds of Witness is part of a BBC mini series. I enjoyed the series immensely even though I had already read the books. Totally charming.

I'm now 45% into Inamorata and still enjoying it (still a little slowly) and decided to sneak in two more Harry Potter + Dresden Files Crossover Fan Fiction short stories, These two were initially somewhat disappointing compared to the first two. But after finishing reading each of them I decided that they had proved to be quite interesting as well.

They are:
Harry Potter and the Wizard of the White council
and
Harry Potter and the Winter Court.

Good reading!

Now back to Inamorata!

About 65% of the way through The Moonstone and loving it. It's really rather humorous and I'm dying to know how it all turns out! If I have one complaint, it is perhaps that he writes a little more in each narrator's voice than is necessary - there are whole chapters that could probably be done away with that wouldn't really affect the overall story or character development. However, that's the 19th century for you.

Just finished "Realtime Interrupt" by James P. Hogan, which I bought from Baen in August 2000.

Joe Corrigan wakes up in hospital, having lost his memory. Over the next few years, he struggles to re-integrate with society, but can't help thinking that there's something not quite right. He gradually realises that he's living inside a virtual reality simulation - one that he helped to create (not a spoiler - this occurs pretty early in the book). The book then switches between what Joe's doing in the VR world and a series of flashbacks which explain how he ended up there.

Excellent "hard SF" which will particularly appeal to computer geeks. Highly recommended.

Does it explain how he ended up playing in goal for Manchester City and England in the 70s and 80s?

I finished Looking for Alaska by John Green. While it wasn't bad, it clearly wasn't what I was expected nor what I wanted to read at the moment. The story has some nice insights, though. I think I'll rate it three stars.

Right now, I'm not sure what my next read will be. I'll let you know as soon as I've made up my mind.

Happy reading everyone

Yes. With Ian Carmichael. They were all very well done. But even as good as they were, the books themselves are even better. I admit, this is not my first time through, but it's still an absolute delight. The scene I was reading last night had me quietly but deeply chuckling. Lord Peter is trying to get information from an isolated farmer (Grimethorpe) and is talking absolute piffle in the way he does. Inspired.

Next up: Barrenlands by Doranna Durgin. I got this as a freebie from B&N last year. Apparently a prequel to the Dun Lady's Jess series.

And so I did, and unfortunately it failed to really impress me. A decent enough children's ghost/horror story, but the characters were flat and at no point did it properly grip me. I hope the sequel will be more interesting, now that the world-building's done and out of the way.

After Shiverton Hall, I read Kim Harrison's For a Few Demons More (the fifth in the Rachel Morgan / Hollows series). I have a number of problems with this series, mostly to do with the inordinate number of men Rachel seems to drool over (not that I have a problem with a woman finding many men attractive, but it's seriously hard for me to believe that all the men she meets are attractive enough to remark on as such), and with the writing (epithets are one of my pet peeves and there's a lot of that in this series), but something about the books is just so ... well, if the book mentioned above failed to hook me, this series, in spite of its faults, has hooked me.

I am glad I've picked up the first 11 books on various sales, as I very much intend to keep reading.

Yesterday I finished A Duty to the Dead by Charles Todd (first book in the Bess Crawford series) and - once I'd decided I can suspend my disbelief regarding some plot conveniences - enjoyed it very much. It's not a perfect book, but the atmosphere, writing and characters worked for me.

And now, since I have some catching up to do after a month of little reading time, I'm going for a double in my this year's sub-challenges (two of which were "read at least 12 paper books" and "read at least 12 Doctor Who books") and I'm reading a paperback of Dan Abnett's The Silent Stars Go By, an Eleventh Doctor, Amy & Rory adventure. Enjoying it a great deal so far.

It has been a while since I updated my progress.

I finished Assassin's Apprentice in June then, while waiting for Royal Assassin from the library, read The Delta Chain by Iain Edward Henn which was an interesting crime/conspiracy/thriller mostly set in Australia. I also read Meat by Terry Bisson for about the 5th time. I love that story.

It took me over 2 weeks to read Royal Assassin after it finally came in but I am finished now. Next will be The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) which also finally came in from the library. Only a few month's late for the book club. I am also going to try to read The Club of Queer Trades for the literary club this month.

After that I will try to get Assassin's Quest and finally finish the Farseer Trilogy after starting it back in the late 90s.

I was remembering a bit mistakenly. I actually read Clouds of Witness last year and had seen the series earlier, although most of the books I had read first. Your mention of Grimethorpe made me remember how some things seemed the same although absolutely different in a strange but charming way. BBC does book adaptations exceedingly well usually. Another example in a similar vein is Peter Davison as Margery Allingham's Campion. Overall I'll take the books but the series is delightful.

Agreed, both series and books of Campion are excellent. Though we're only recently starting to see the ebook versions of them.

... And slightly annoyingly, the first book in the series isn't being released until next February.
