Exactly. It doesn't happen that often, but severe turbulence can injure people not wearing seatbelts. Not to mention people sitting nearby if someone gets tossed out of their seat. Turbulence isn't always predictable, so it makes sense to me to buckle up when seated. I've never understood the reluctance some passengers have about seatbelts. It's not as if it has to be super tight all the time.

More like insecurity measures if you ask me. At least in USA where we tend to way overreact to past terrorism. Terrorist have won by making us take ten times longer to board airplanes than we did prior to 9/11. Stuff will happen, and I'm betting these stupid regulations won't stop it from happening. In my opinion we should dial back the insecurity measures and rely on pissed off passengers to beat the snot out of terrorist. I've seen lots of reports where someone acts up on an airplane these days and the passengers become his worst nightmare. Fool us once, but not twice kind of thing. Even on 9/11, once the passengers caught wind of what was happening on three other airplanes they acted and put a stop to it. I think it will be very difficult for terrorists to take over an airplane now as passengers are much more vigilant and much more likely to act with their own deadly force.

Yep. I usually end up on an airplane a least 4x a month. Other than taking the belt off to get up to use the restroom on longer flights, I usually just keep in on. It doesn't stop me from reading, doing work on my laptop, sleeping, or anything else.

Well... passengers may be able to prevent someone from attacking someone on the plain,but there isn't much they can do if someone goes off to the bathroom and triggers an explosive device or manages to get one in with the luggage.

I wasn't thinking so much of the mid-flight time when the "fasten seatbelt" light has been turned off. I just cannot believe the number of people who try to avoid using their seatbelts during takeoff and landing -- or who unhitch them as soon as the wheels hit the ground.

Like most others who've posted, I keep my belt on unless I'm leaving my seat to visit the toilet. Mostly I read -- or doze since I seem to wind up on early-morning flights.

I'm just terribly pleased that airlines in the USA no longer require you to turn off your e-reader during takeoff and landing. That means I don't have to carry both the Kindle and a paperback onto the flight. (That's how I wound up leaving the Kindle in a seat-back pocket!!) Since I plan on reading for the entire flight, no matter how long it might be, I charge up the Kindle the night before I fly. So, unless I forget, these new rules won't affect me. Though, I do have to make sure that I don't run out the laptop's battery while waiting in the terminal!
