What do you mean "there's no place to get these books legally", Helen?

There is no place to get these books legally. There is no website that can tell you for sure that there are no alterations made. Sure maybe they can say that, but you would be foolish to believe them.

I don't think you are trying to get illegal books, just that what you are looking for is not there.

Your best source is the public library if you want free books that have not been altered in a harmful way.

Helen
Public library proves nothing.

It could still have been altered by the guy in charge of the printing run. Remember, we're dealing with conspiracy theories here, so this is a perfectly reasonable extension of the base theme.

Since the OP is looking for free ebooks, there is no place to get them legally. Since the stores where they are legally sold will charge for them.

Although they might be offered as freebies, there is no guarantee that they will be at that price point. So even Amazon/Kobo/B&N/Apple/Google/other cannot be said to be a "website that offers free [self-help] .ePub files for download".

I mean that as an example, Tony Robbins books, again and those of that ilk, IIRC was mentioned by the OP are copyrighted and most are not available in my library for loan as eBooks.

You can buy the books of course, but this is not free which seemed to be a requirement.

But... I have not checked all libraries and all bookstores etc. so maybe I am spouting nonsense.

You can get many of these books as paper, audio, and video from my libraries. But I am pretty sure the OP was looking for ebooks.

And of course it may be legal to get books in any way at all where the OP lives, but to get them guaranteed unaltered, I am thinking not.

But you have drawn my attention to the fact that I left out the word free in a couple of places dammit So I have edited my post accordingly.

I guess I was just trying to say that people were not all avoiding giving polite and honest answers, just that the place to get free, totally guaranteed as originally printed, self help ebooks doesn't seem to exist in my world.

Sorry if I was dreadfully unclear and probably confusing the OP more.

I phrased it as a question, but my point was that even a "genuine" ebook (or paper book) might have been altered multiple times.

Well the OP sure as heck isn't going to get any help here at MR with obtaining pirated books. I thought he was looking to buy them, hence my recommendation to get them from a reputable retailer.

The OP needs to clarify precisely what it is he's looking for.

Thanks!
You could try the Internet Archive for books in the public domain. They usually have pdf versions of the original text, though it's sometimes very hard to find a particular edition. They often also have mobi and ePub versions, though the formatting does not please everyone.

I don't ask for much from an ebook. Use "medium" (or unspecified) size for standard text, use 1.5em for indents, don't skip lines between paragraphs, don't indent the first paragraph or anything that's centered, and if you use a visible section divider, skip a line (or use a 1em margin) above and below it. If you specify a line-height, set it to 1.2 and don't specify units for it. Use one space after a period, except with initials - thus, "C.J. Cherryh" rather than "C. J. Cherryh." Don't overspecify things; use CSS classes and only use the style rules you need. Above all, though? Be consistent.

But then, I'm a weirdo. I like clean design.
I too like minimalist design in eBooks. It'd just easier to deal with. You wont believe the amount of junk left in the average CSS. Use Sigil or Calibre to strip the unused classes from the CSS and you'll get s CSS (sometimes) that is less than 1/2 the size.

Sure I will. Lots of things are specified at the wrong level, such as books where paragraphs are specified to use font A, then there's a span class defined to set font B, and the resulting code nests that span inside every paragraph. The much cleaner approach is to specify the font once, at the BODY level, and then look for any exceptions...like headers.

Unless the new RMSDK in the 3.5.0 Kobo firmware fixes the bug, specifying the font in the body didn't work.

I don't think the OP is looking for pirated books intentionally at least.

A lot of people, as I am sure you know, do not understand the basics, never mind the nuances of the issue. Anyone who understands would not be asking the question IMO, especially here.

When the subject arises, which it often does, and it is not an obvious attempt at gaining approval or inciting others to bad behavior, or starting the old familiar controversies once again about IP, copyright, DRM etc. I tell them the best source is the library, whether ebook or paper.

I am thinking, right or wrong, that the OP actually thinks what they are looking for exists legally and we were not answering because we did not want to or because we are too stupid to understand. So in my typical beat a horse to death fashion I was trying to say this wasn't so.

From the very first post in this thread:

Quote:
I know if I buy an e-book from Amazon it's most likely genuine, but the vast majority of the e-books I'm reading are from people who have just written their own e-books and released it online without a publisher at all. Many are free e-books. A lot of the e-books I'm reading now are educational so I want to know that what I'm reading is genuine.
So he/she is used to getting free, self-published non-fiction books and she/he is looking for more of the same, with the caveat that his/her paranoia won't let her/him sleep at night for the fear of altered books. He/She wants some *proof* that the books he/she is getting aren't going to corrupt his/her mind.

So, I agree Helen. I think that EbookNovice is just what his/her username implies. Unfortunately for them, there is no answer. Like conspiracy theorists, all answers are suspect.
