Not really... they tried to build a system that could not easily be subverted by one person, or one branch of the system.

Of course, when all branches of the system are subverted, all bets are off...

I'm glad to see Obama's not just waiting for Jan 10 to get busy.

I'm not sure how glad I am that he wants to bail out the auto industry. Not that I want all those auto workers to lose their jobs, of course... but when an industry deliberately and deviously takes advantage of the public on multiple fronts (environmental, social, economic), bribing the government to do it, I have a really hard time accepting that we ought to help them at all... I actually want to see GM fail.

Having said that, I wish I had an alternative... but short of outright Federalization of GM, or one of the other (probably foreign) automakers buying them, I can't think of a thing. I'd probably feel better if I thought the people directly responsible for GM's policies would be stripped of their positions (and most of the millions in earnings they've been squirreling away), and a new board and directors were to be put in place to lead them in a sensible direction.

But since I don't expect that to happen, either, I'm left with a very sour taste in my mouth about the whole thing.

Here on Planet pshrynk, where the skies are always sunny with soft, pink clouds floating by over cute little bunnehs hopping in the yard, frollicking without actually eating all the damned flowers, GM is going to be ftaken over by the Democrats, the execs will be reduced in salary to a maximum of 5 fimes the average factory workers at the top of the food chain, and they will be broklen up into business units and sold off, with the charter of developing fuel efficient and altfuel cars. Then I woke up screaming.

As happy as I am that gas prices are down, I think it fixed itself too soon to burn the idea of alt fuel into the American mind. What do you think?

Yes. I really don't like the idea of $200/barrel oil, but the consequences of $60/barrel are more worrying.

I'm also very worried about the support of the Motor Industries. I have sympathy for the workers, and that the rapidity of the change in the economy has probably prevented more manageable adjustments. This support could all to easily turn into protectionism. Combined with the presented situation you can get international hostilities. And on today of all days I really don't want to be thinking about the end of the 1930's happening again.

Here's hoping he uses it to encourage a whole new family of alternative fuel cars. A sort of JFK-type far reaching grand challenge: "by 2020 we will have no car that uses oil-derived fuel".

Changing our infrastructure to allow hydrogen pod exchange/refueling at gas stations has gone nowhere in the US. There are a few experiments going on out in California, but it's more of a gimmick than anything else.

It's going to hurt for a while when we finally commit to alt fuel. It will cost money for station owners to add that service. People with petrol-based cars will still have them for decades even after alt fuel becomes the industry standard, and those older vehicles will still need fuel.

Such uncertainties make my neck tense up. Ouch.

The sad part is that until we all get together and say "THIS is the alternative we alla will use", it won't happen anyway. We need a standard, otherwise no-one is willing too invest in the infrastructure needed. The gas station owners don't want to sink money into it if there are no potential customers and the endusers won't buy a car using that alternate fuel unless they can get that fuel wherever they go. So, it's kind of a catch-22 thing really.
