In order to read The Fault in our Stars by John Green, I'm currently reading Looking for Alaska. So far it's taking me longer than I thought to get into the story (I'm at the 11% mark).

Because Looking for Alaska was John Green's first book and I've seen comments stating that it may seem a little lackluster if read after The Fault in our Stars. So I thought I'll read the good one first and then move to the better one

Ah yes. I had seen that there will be a new episode before the end of the year. But I'm "caught up" for now. Good point.

Huh! OK. I thought you might have heard that it was a sequel/companion book, or something.

Feel free to abandon the book you're not getting into and start the one you really want to read!

Which was good. An enjoyable mixture of fantasy and SF with some good author interviews. And I hadn't read any of the reprint stories before either, which is nice.

Next up: Rescue Mode by Ben Bova and Les Johnson. Their moon one was quite good, I hope this one is as good or better.

I just finished Crimes Against my Brother by David Adams Richards. This is another brilliant book by Richards. Like so many of his books he telegraphs every bit of destruction and ruin that eventually will befall his characters, but I just can't help reading every bit of it. For those who say they hate depressing books, don't even bother. But, for those like to read about some of the real people we all know who drink, cheat, lie, gossip and betray, this is for you.

Back to the Moon was Travis Taylor and Les Johnson, not Bova/Johnson. Rescue Mode was a real page-turner for me, but the date on one of the chapters is a couple of years off (2034 becomes 2032) and the French dialogue was plagued by misused accent marks.

I ran into one of Baen's editors at the end of June and sent him a corrected EPUB; hopefully they'll verify it and update the ebooks and later printings.

Ooooh! I've wanted to do this several times. Wonder if any publisher would accept a corrected copy...

Just finished Lysistrata by Aristophanes. This play was first performed in Athens in 411 BCE, and if it taught me anything, it's that there's nothing new under the sun. Take this contemporary-sounding bit of dialogue for example:

MEN:
I won’t be kissed.

WOMEN:
O yes, you will. Your wishes do not matter.

MEN:
O botheration take you all! How you cajole and flatter.
A hell it is to live with you; to live without, a hell:
How truly was that said.

I had no idea the cliché, "Women: Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em" was so ancient.

SPECIAL NOTE to the wonderful women of MobileRead: Aristophanes said it; I didn't. Send your cards and letters to Aristophanes C/O Ancient Writers, Athens, Greece.

"Lysistrata" is a wonderful play. We studied the original Greek version of it on my Greek course. If anyone's unfamiliar with it, it's about a woman in ancient Athens during the Peloponnesian War who organises a campaign among all the woman of the city to withhold their sexual favours from their husbands until they end the war. Very, very funny indeed.

And the women show surprising strength and cunning considering the era in which the play was written. I would go so far as to call Aristophanes an early feminist. The character of Lysistrata is certainly no shrinking violet.

Just finished up the first 3 books in the Malazan: Book of the Fallen.

They are very good and keep getting longer, haha. 500 pages to 800 to 900 and book 4 is over 1,000.

While they are definitely good, they are a bit grim so I am taking a break and have started reading one of the most recent Star Wars novels, Crucible by Troy Denning. Price just dropped on Kindle since the paperback came out.

I'm currently reading The Kentucky Brothers trilogy by Wanda Brunstetter, the On The Runway series by Melody Carlson, and Gulliver's Travels. I have 32 books on my Sony PRS-300, which makes it hard to decide which book to read next!!

Between football and having visitors, I've still been pressed for time so in the last week, I've only managed the new stories + novella in the Skulduggery Pleasant: Armageddon Outta Here short story & novella collection.

I loved one of the three new short stories and found the other two okay, if a bit unsatisfying for a number of reasons (but I should say I'm not a fan of short stories in general - they're very rarely satisfying for me, so I really only read them for things I'm already a big fan for). The one new novella was the best of the lot, although a little bittersweet, taking place before the most recently published full novel, back when certain things that happened in that most recently published novel hadn't yet happened and everything was good.

Anyway, I haven't yet absolutely decided what my next read will be - now that one of my guests has left and there is little football left, I should slowly start having time again! - but seeing as I just got the second Shiverton Hall book on NetGalley and I haven't yet read the first one, in spite of owning it, I will likely read that first book next.
