Free Today on Amazon UK - The Tortured Detective by Pirate Irwin

'1942. Paris is a city under occupation.
Detective Inspector Lafarge, a former prisoner of war, is sent to investigate the murder of the beautiful young film actress Marguerite Suchet.
The man who has called upon him is the Vichy chief of police René Bousquet - who Lafarge despises.
The chief suspect is a lawyer and avowed anti-Nazi, Pierre-Yves de Chastelain.
But is he only being targeted because of his run-ins with the law before the war broke out?
Lafarge quickly discovers that both Bousquet and an Abwehr officer who was the lover of the film star are equally suspect.
Have they found an easy suspect to become the fall guy?
And are they manipulating Lafarge, and the law, to cover their own tracks?
As Lafarge becomes increasingly repelled by his colleagues’ behaviour towards all those who oppose the Nazis, he must question the allegiances and loyalty of everyone around him...and ultimately his own as well.
‘The Tortured Detective’ is an exciting historical thriller set amidst the complex divided loyalties of France during World War II. '

Free: Venetian Mask by Michaela Thompson. Published in 1987 by Scribner in hardcover.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I1RPWTI

Quote:
The surreal splendor of Venice glitters and mesmerizes as six so-called friends who, it turns out, barely know each other meet at Carnival to play a malignant game that quickly turns murderous. Sally, the “Tallahassee lassie” spurned by the rest as a virtual hayseed, is swept up by a mysterious count, attending masked balls, operas, and Carnival revels even as she mourns her marriage and dodges a deadly pursuer. “Things should happen at Carnival,” says her unlikely protector, who resembles Harlequin in more than his costume. “If they go on just the same, there’s no reason for Carnival at all.” There’s absolutely no chance of that in this psychological tour de force of surging identities wrestling to emerge in people forced by violence to confront their inner Harlequins and Medusas.

The characters change costumes, alter egos, sex partners (and preferences), and most of all, their stories while Carnival swirls around them, each more desperate by the hour to solve the murder, commit another, save a career, escape a past…whatever it is that Carnival, as much a character as the humans, seems to command them to do. The guignol grows ever grander, the danger more heightened as the clock ticks toward midnight on Fat Tuesday and Sally finds she has more enemies than she thought

For about nine more hours (it's currently 7 am, July 5, US Pacific time), the four books in the Jacob Burns mystery series by Matt Witten are on sale as Kindle Countdown deals in the Amazon US store.

Link is: http://www.amazon.com/Matt-Witten/e/B00AG1DXKW/

Right now three of them (The Killing Bee, Grand Delusion, Breakfast at Madeline's) are $0.99 and the other one (Strange Bedfellows, the third in the series) is free. Not quite sure why you would make the third one free, but WTH...

This series was published in DTB by Signet a while back, and I remember reading a couple of them and enjoying them.

Part of today's Amazon UK Kindle Daily Deal is "The Yard", by Alex Grecian, published by Penguin.

Quote:
A year after Jack the Ripper claimed his last victim, Victorian London is in the grip of a wave of crime and murder, with its citizens no longer able to trust the police to protect them. The newly formed Murder Squad of Scotland Yard, made up of just twelve detectives, battles in vain against the tide of violence and cruelty.

When the body of a Yard detective is found in a suitcase, his lips sewn together and his eyes sewn shut, it becomes clear that not even the police are safe from attack. Has the Ripper returned - or is a new killer at large?

Walter Day, the squad's newest recruit, is assigned the case and finds a strange ally in the Yard's first forensic pathologist, Dr Bernard Kingsley. Kingsley, a pioneer of groundbreaking forensic science, is convinced that strange new techniques such as finger printing are the key to finding the person responsible. With Kingsley's help, will Day find the murderer before it's too late? Or are the police once again helpless to stop a serial killer whose brutality knows no limits?

Sounds interesting to me. Worth the risk at 99p.

Normally I wouldn't bother to post a free short story promoting a new book, but it's James Lee Burke. After some dithering I just decided to post it, and you can decide if you want it. Mr. Burke is among the masters of the mystery genre and at least a couple of his books surely qualify as exceptional literary fiction.

Free from Simon & Schuster: A Dust Bowl Tale of Bonnie and Clyde: A Short Story by James Lee Burke.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GVJ16CK

Quote:
From James Lee Burke, called "America's best novelist" by The Denver Post, comes a brand new e-short about a young man's encounter with the infamous Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow - a story that becomes the first chapter in Burke's upcoming novel Wayfaring Stranger.

Sixteen-year-old Weldon Holland has had to grow up fast as he tries to support his family in the aftermath of the agricultural disaster of the Dust Bowl.

One night, a carload of strangers appears on the Hollands' property, carrying the air of incipient danger underneath a veneer of pleasantries. Weldon finds himself inexplicably drawn to the group of trespassing vagabonds - who, despite being camped out on a hidden riverbank in the middle of nowhere, drive the most expensive automobile that Weldon has ever seen.

In the unbearable, rainless heat of a Dust Bowl summer, Weldon will find himself mixed up in an encounter with the infamous bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde - an encounter that changes the course of Weldon's life...and history itself.

Rich with criminal and social history of the American West and a young boy's struggle to become a man, "A Dust Bowl Tale of Bonnie and Clyde" is just the beginning of Weldon Holland's story.

Angels & Demons by Dan Brown

$2.99 Amazon US

Quote:
An ancient secret brotherhood.
A devastating new weapon of destruction.
When world-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to a Swiss research facility to analyze a mysterious symbol -- seared into the chest of a murdered physicist -- he discovers evidence of the unimaginable: the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati...the most powerful underground organization ever to walk the earth. The Illuminati has now surfaced to carry out the final phase of its legendary vendetta against its most hated enemy -- the Catholic Church.
Langdon's worst fears are confirmed on the eve of the Vatican's holy conclave, when a messenger of the Illuminati announces they have hidden an unstoppable time bomb at the very heart of Vatican City. With the countdown under way, Langdon jets to Rome to join forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and mysterious Italian scientist, to assist the Vatican in a desperate bid for survival.
Embarking on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that snakes across Rome toward the long-forgotten Illuminati lair...a clandestine location that contains the only hope for Vatican salvation.
An explosive international thriller, Angels & Demons careens from enlightening epiphanies to dark truths as the battle between science and religion turns to war.

Hooligans by William Diehl is free today at Amazon. This was published by Ballantine in 1985 and became a best seller. This is the first time it has been free since it was released in ebook form in July 2012. The edition offered today was released November 2013.

Quote:
Jake Kilmer is a cop for the Feds. His specialty is a branch of the Mafia known as the Cincinnati Triad. He's pursued them for years, and now they've set up shop in Dunetown, Georgia. This time, they will not escape the Hooligans, a tough squad of ex-cops that Jake has organized. This time, he'll settle the score once and for all.... [synopsis from Random House website]

Blood Horizon by Mark Dewar

$0.00: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L5AYRVC
£0.00: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00L5AYRVC
Quote:
The tenth century.
Cordoba, the capital of Moorish Spain, is at the centre of a power struggle in the medieval world.
The city is on the brink of war with their sworn enemy, Baghdad.
Its ships are only days away from setting sail on a mission that could decide the future of the whole country.
That is until the Admiral of the Royal Fleet is found murdered.
And soon afterwards Lieutenant Haytham, the man assigned as bodyguard to the Admiral, is found dead as well.
As investigations deepen to find the killer, a much bigger threat soon arises.
The people of Baghdad are creating a terrifying weapon.
They are harvesting the deadly anthrax disease and sealing it in earthenware pots, ready to unleash on Cordoba.
Can the guards of Cordoba get to the bottom of this deadly plot?
Or will they be too late to stop the oncoming blood horizon?
‘Blood Horizon’ is an expertly plotted historical mystery set among the palaces and mosques of 10th century Cordoba. It is perfect for fans of C.J. Sansom.
'Brilliantly plotted and rich in period detail.' - Robert Foster, best-selling author of 'The Lunar Code'.
'A gripping historical mystery.' - Tom Kasey, best-selling author of 'The Dante Conspiracy'.
Mark Dewar has a fascination for Spain in the time of the Moors, Al Andalus, and for crime fiction. This is the follow up to his first novel, ‘Checkmate’.
Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent digital publisher.
This is a sequel to 'Checkmate' novel which I found the quite enjoyable 'whodunnit'. 10th century Andalusia appealed to me as vivid backdrop.
