Paul will verify this, but I seem to recall that you will be slugged 1 pound or so VAT for your 1 penny purchase.

So you do need to use the gift card method to purchase these very very cheap India books.
I did indeed get charged £1 per purchase. But this was a bank charge, not VAT. It wouldn't have been a problem if I'd used a shopping cart, but I bought each one individually!

I did buy a gift card, but it was a WHSmith/Kobo gift card, and only usable in the UK store. I'll investigate the eCard.

Just to make you feel better the best I can determine, the Indian store doesn't have a shopping cart so you had no choice but to buy each book individually.

yes, you can buy in a country and use in another, as joehunt did.

I bought the card that I'm using now in April, maybe something changed since then and it no longer works, I still have credit in there, I’m expecting to have to buy another when the new contest begins, provided that kobo has better codes, last time I only got two 55% and a lot below 30% and I play with 10 accounts each time.

I think when I bougt it I was in the old checkout, not sure if that makes diference.

Cool, all sorted now just had to be careful i was logged into the india store when redeeming a nz bought card, it seemed like it could have gone awry at that point perhaps.

Bought loads but seem to have only spent about 30p bit mad.
Thanks everyone.

Thank you! Even PERKOPOLIS worked (used shopping cart). RS. 211.20 for 38 books. That's really crazy :-)

Some of the Amartya Sen books are cheaper in India than they are in Hong Kong.

How do you get the shopping cart to work in India? I'm using Chrome and only see the "buy" button.

hmm, i tried changing stores from India to Hong Kong to see if my remaining credit in rupees moved with me but it said i couldn't transfer remaining credit and i should contact customer services to deal with my issue. Just curious more than anything.

So i then tried moving to the New Zealand store with my remaining Indian credit still intact (wasn't sure what would happen) and it transferred! I then used perkopolis and so could buy Whose names are Unknown by Sanora Babb for 87p yes!

Strangely it charged me in HKD in paypal? definitely in the NZ store. possibly a cookie related fluke as i was trying initially to move to Hong Kong from india, bit odd but ill take it.

In the end I bought about 49 ebooks, for ca. 250 INR. All discounted ebooks by Patricia Reilly Giff. Seems to be a good writer for children literature. The "young heros" series by Jane Yolen. Also seems to be interesting. And all discounted books by Lawrence Block. He got some book awards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Block). I don't know If I will read him, but for such less money? It is just 3 Euro for all books :-) Or 4 USD.

Lawrence Block is pretty well-known. Kind of meant to be a funny thief caper. I normally like that stuff, but had some issues getting into it probably because I read too much Donald Westlake (The two are often compared.) Or perhaps it was the thief outside the fantasy world where I'm used to cloak and dagger and magic...

Yep most of what was on offer in India from Lawrence block amounted to one off short stories bar the Chip Harrison series. Bernie Rhodenbarr was discounted a bit but i already have vol1 and will get vol2 when a decent code appears.

Aside from Open Road are there any other publishers/authors? I haven't been able to find any...
