The biggest difference in the workforce mentality I encounter is shock that an employee is expected to actually be productive the entire time they're not at lunch or on break.

Actually, 12.50 an hour doesn't sound that bad for an entirely unskilled position.

May people save a bit of money and get ahead at les than $12.50 an hour. Many people go farther in debt each year with no assets at 3 times that much.
I've worked at different levels of the wage scale starting at 30 cents an hour and making as much as $120 an hour. The $120 was very nice, but not steady work by any means and the stress level was high. made me pretty crazy and I spent a lot foolishly. Still it accounts for about 1/4 of my retirement savings. These days I work a menial job for $30-$40 an hour which anyone can get (there are always vacancies where I work and many in the industry) and this type of job has paid of my condo in 7 years and contributed the other 3/4s of my retirement savings. And I actually like the work. I think $12.50 is a reasonable rate for a starting position requiring few skills. But one can do much better or even much worse. Up to the individual whether they accept the job or not. Helen |

In other words, the goal of modern management is to never actually have to manage anything. Just follow the chain of policy to it's natural conclusion; point at the relevant spot in the manual, and recite it in an authoritative voice. A monkey could do it. Spoiler:

My first job was mowing yards at age 12. I mowed 14 yards a week every week for two years. That was one a day Sunday through Friday and 8 on Saturday. I made anywhere from $2.00 a yard to $3.00 a yard, depending on size. I guess today that would be called child labor and I would not be allowed to do the job.
I have also worked a warehouse job staring at $9.75 and hour and leaving at $12.50 an hour. I considered myself quite lucky to have that job in an area where the largest employer paid mostly minimum wage and actively tried to keep higher paying businesses out. Now I am self employed and it seems like I work all the time. I love people that tell me they wish they could be self employed and set their own hours. Yeah sure you would all 24/7 of them. When I am not working no one gets paid, and I am the last one to get his paycheck. And do not get me started on the mentality of entirely to many employees who think that you owe them a paycheck and that making them work for it is abuse. I also like the ones that think there is nothing wrong with sitting on their rear end drawing unemployment while not looking for work until it runs out. Their excuse is, they paid for it and are entitled to it. Most seem to not realize that no where on their pay stubs is a deduction for unemployment insurance. Unemployment insurance, both state and federal, are paid for by the employer. And when a former employee is awarded unemployment the employer's insurance rate goes up to pay for it. I will now relinquish the soapbox to someone else. ![]() Apache |

Hubby worked at a factory and was on what is called the hotline where they bake enamel onto the inner tanks of water heaters. He worked near a 1500 degree furnace. He started out at $10.75 and he was there 5 years as was making close to $15 an hour by the end. Yes it was HOT in there and he come home all sweaty and stinky. I really don't know of any factories or warehouses with A/C just big fans usually.
There was one factory in the Tricities that made batteries and they paid $7.50 and you had to do rotating 12 hour shifts. I'm sure you all heard of Exide batteries so we was so happy he get on at the Water heater factory instead. $12.50 is a really good wage for starting out working at a warehouse. |
