I agree with this. It doesn't take longer than physically turning a page takes, and you stop noticing it as you read very soon, just as turning a physical page on a paper book doesn't interrupt your train of thought.

I agree, too. The objection I've occasionally seen in the past is that the screen of a 6" reader holds less text than the page of a printed book, so you have to turn the page more often, but for goodness sake, who is really in that much of a hurry to get through a book that an extra fraction of a second to turn a page is going to worry them?

Also it seems that some people cannot get used to the flickering. A friend bought a reader were it was not possible to disable the flickering (Kobo?) as a gift and the person getting it could not get used to it. |

That does seem to be an issue for a small proportion of people, yes. Most people using an eInk reader find that after a few hours' usage, their brain simply filters out the flicker and they stop being consciously aware of it. And of course on modern eInk screens the flicker is much less obtrusive than it was on the older ones.

I think the page turning on an ebook falls into the rhythm of reading much more smoothly than physical page turns do. It happens more often but it takes less time and less effort. Even scrolling on a tablet take effort. I think ebook page turns are easier and less disruptive than any alternative.
This, to me, feels like complaints about ereaders being uncomfortable to hold onto. Yes, your hands have to hold something, but anyone who has ever read even just a moderately sized paper book would have to find ereaders easier. |

I get migraine headaches but I don't notice a flicker on my e-readers. That would make me stop using them. The backlit screens are a bit hard to read on but I find the lit e-ink screens very comfortable for reading. I can adjust the font and the light to be just how I like it and it's probably better than a reading lamp and a paper book for me. (Particularly if the reading lamp uses a fluorescent light. Those are bad for headaches.)

I don't notice it when reading an epub book. A few times Overdrive has had a book I wanted in pdf only, and I definitely noticed how slow the page turns were when compared to epub (this was on my Sony PRS-T1).

Agree with most of the comments here.
I've just gotten my Kobo Glo not long ago, and rather than the speed of page turning, I'm still getting used to the "sensitivity" of the touch screen. Before this I've always read on my iPad, and the screen is always sensitive enough; just a light touch and the page turns. But on the Glo, it's not always the case. Most of the time it's sensitive enough, but there are times I need to tap more than once to turn the page. I suppose it takes some time to know how I should tap the screen with the right force or on the best spots. ![]() |
