I agree with this. It doesn't take longer than physically turning a page takes, and you stop noticing it as you read very soon, just as turning a physical page on a paper book doesn't interrupt your train of thought.

I agree, too. The objection I've occasionally seen in the past is that the screen of a 6" reader holds less text than the page of a printed book, so you have to turn the page more often, but for goodness sake, who is really in that much of a hurry to get through a book that an extra fraction of a second to turn a page is going to worry them?

I would have thought that the argument was that the reading rhythm was disturbed.

Also it seems that some people cannot get used to the flickering. A friend bought a reader were it was not possible to disable the flickering (Kobo?) as a gift and the person getting it could not get used to it.

That does seem to be an issue for a small proportion of people, yes. Most people using an eInk reader find that after a few hours' usage, their brain simply filters out the flicker and they stop being consciously aware of it. And of course on modern eInk screens the flicker is much less obtrusive than it was on the older ones.

I think the page turning on an ebook falls into the rhythm of reading much more smoothly than physical page turns do. It happens more often but it takes less time and less effort. Even scrolling on a tablet take effort. I think ebook page turns are easier and less disruptive than any alternative.

This, to me, feels like complaints about ereaders being uncomfortable to hold onto. Yes, your hands have to hold something, but anyone who has ever read even just a moderately sized paper book would have to find ereaders easier.

I get migraine headaches but I don't notice a flicker on my e-readers. That would make me stop using them. The backlit screens are a bit hard to read on but I find the lit e-ink screens very comfortable for reading. I can adjust the font and the light to be just how I like it and it's probably better than a reading lamp and a paper book for me. (Particularly if the reading lamp uses a fluorescent light. Those are bad for headaches.)

I don't notice it when reading an epub book. A few times Overdrive has had a book I wanted in pdf only, and I definitely noticed how slow the page turns were when compared to epub (this was on my Sony PRS-T1).

Same. The only time it would (could) be an issue is when you want to flip many screens backwards or forwards.

I've found that also. I wish you could page by 5 pages by holding shift while paging or something.

Agree with most of the comments here.

I've just gotten my Kobo Glo not long ago, and rather than the speed of page turning, I'm still getting used to the "sensitivity" of the touch screen. Before this I've always read on my iPad, and the screen is always sensitive enough; just a light touch and the page turns.

But on the Glo, it's not always the case. Most of the time it's sensitive enough, but there are times I need to tap more than once to turn the page. I suppose it takes some time to know how I should tap the screen with the right force or on the best spots.

It may not be a sensitivity issue. I think the ereaders are very aggressive at going to sleep when nothing has happened for some time (a minute or two) to save on power. When they do go to sleep, you usually have to touch it once just to wake it up before it accepts your command.

I see. But it happened when I was reading; I don't think I stayed on the page for more than one minute. It just didn't respond when I tapped the screen to turn the page. I had to tap it again - or 2 or 3 times - to get it work. But it doesn't happen too often, so I can still tolerate it.

First make sure you're up to date on firmware. Then... train yourself. I have had both a Glo and iPad, and the technique used for the IR touch of the Kobo is very different from the iPad. Remember that it's not pressure on the screen that turns the page with the Glo, it's detection of the beams just above the screen being broken. I found that a somewhat slowish light touch worked best, whereas with the iPad you can get away with a very rapid prod.

Some readers (the Kindle PW, for example) have a method for rapidly flipping through pages.

Exactly, I think I just need more practice. Indeed it's very different from iPad. Thank you for your advice! I'll work on it.
