It is unashamedly a device to facilitate one step purchasing from Amazon of anything you can aim its camera at - turning brick & mortar stores into "showcases" to visit, handle/test the product, and buy with free shipping (and possibly no sales tax) from Amazon.
Exactly.

It's a slightly smaller, 3D Fire that also makes phone calls. There are millions of Amazon customers who will buy this. They already have a rather large customer base who've proven they don't give a damn about the iOS or Google ecosystems when it comes to tablets. Why would they suddenly start caring when it comes to smartphones?

And as for the $650 price tag?? Well ... anybody who's focused on the price of the hardware without a contract isn't in their target demographic either. I actually don't think that person is in ANY of the smart-phone makers' demographics. They just throw a big number out there for the smallish group of people who like to think that buying without a contract imparts some sort of badge of honor. Some will pay it. Those who don't won't be missed on earnings reports. *shrugs*

Amazon sells only a fraction of the tablets Apple does despite being considerably cheaper. Now they are offering their phone at the same price as the competition's top end phones despite considerable limitations. I'm not convinced that this will be a huge success.

There are no huge successes left in the smartphone business.

And nothing Bezos said at the intro even suggests they are looking for one. They're just looking to make a few more bucks off the faithful.

Bezos has given shoppers seamless "One Click" buying on a phone with seemingly phenomenal recognition/identification properties (Firefly) - enabling impulse buying on an unlimited scale. He's not going to make millions selling a smartphone itself - he'll make millions selling everything on Amazon through the smartphone.

Which makes me wonder if Amazon will launch a Firefly android app for other phones/devices so that you can One Click shop at Amazon regardless of your device....

Well, we will see how well it does. I don't think this phone is going to be a world-changer. If someone is an Amazon customer and doesn't already have a smartphone, this might very well entice them. But for people who already have a smartphone, will this entice them to switch? I'm skeptical.

All of which makes the huge price tag of the Fire Phone all the more puzzling. I was very much looking forward to an Amazon smart phone that would meet or beat the competitors' specs while seriously undercutting their price. What we have here seems to be a device that meets the upfront costs and planned obsolescence of the competitors coupled with Amazon's own limited app offerings. Guess I'll be sticking with my prepaid flip phone a bit longer.

Firefly appears the best feature

I like that Firefly app. Its the best feature of the Fire Phone.

If Amazon is smart, they will release an Android and Apple Firefly app. After all, why wouldn't they want Amazon buyers who use other phones?

Even if I did not use it for immediate purchases, I could use it to add products to my Amazon Wish List for later purchase.

They will probably wait to release it until the Fire Phone has been released for three months - probably in November, 2014.

That person is in the demographics of the Nexus or Moto E-G-X series.

Have you tried this free app from Amazon? It's been around for a few years and uses lots of fireflies to identify stuff

It looks like the basis for the Fire phone Firefly - I had never noticed this app.

Here is another precursor for Firefly:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...icecheck&hl=en

Unfortunately, the description says it is incompatible with my Samsung Galaxy s5.

They already have. It's called "Flow" and exists in the search function of their iOS app.
