I just don't get the value proposition of this offer. Why should I pay the money for a top end phone to get what is essentially a vending machine for Amazon and miss out on the advantages of the two big ecosystems, iOS and Android?

Sounds like you probably shouldn't. Is it possible you're not the target demographic?

I was using the Sony PRS 500 back then and purchased a second Sony eReader, the PRS 505, a year later.

My first Kindle purchase was the Kindle Keyboard 2010 for $ 173.99 on 7/30/2010. It was actually $ 139.00 for the KK 2010 and $ 34.99 for a leather cover.

My second Kindle purchase was the Kindle Fire 7" 2011 for $ 243.99 on 9/28/2011. It was actually $ 199.00 for the KF 7 2011 and $ 44.99 for a cover.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure $399 was right. I think I paid $359 for mine several months later during the Oprah promotion. I think the K2 was $279? K3 $179? I've bought 'em all.

My first e-reader was the Kindle 2 and I paid $359.00, so $399.00 for the original is probably right.

Yes, that's true, but who is the target demographic and are there enough of these people to make this a viable product? I really don't see a feature that makes this a compelling buy while the disadvantages are obvious.
Back when Amazon introduced the Kindle the market wasn't awash with attractive competitors.

The fact that it's exclusive to AT&T kills it for me. But even it was an unlocked phone, I would never pay $650 for a smartphone -- there are too many other good (less expensive) choices. I think Amazon should have done an inexpensive "Fire" phone -- kind of like their tablets. Maybe they're planning on releasing those later -- who knows?

The target demographic includes (IMHO) - current Prime members, lifelong Amazon shoppers, current owners of Fire tablets (as pointed out above - the Fire phone is basically a modified Fire tablet), and probably folk who haven't taken the smartphone plunge - who may be reassured by having Mayday available to help them learn to navigate/use a new gadget.

It is unashamedly a device to facilitate one step purchasing from Amazon of anything you can aim its camera at - turning brick & mortar stores into "showcases" to visit, handle/test the product, and buy with free shipping (and possibly no sales tax) from Amazon.

If the tilt/head movement tracking features work as well as promised, it may be helpful for folk with disabilities.
