Ye, there's a mathematical possibility, but it is very unlikely.
Still, at least we're as good as Spain! |

England must feel poorly for dominating possession and having more shots on target but with no result.

I don't remember a English player i wanted to have in my team since Chris Waddle and Paul Gascoigne.
I think they overemphasize the physical side of the game but can't develop players with a good technical level. I rarely see a english player dribbling or paying with the ball. It is all pass and long pass and run and headers. In today's game that is not enough, specially if the other countries already closed the gap there was in the phisicality of their game. England needs to put kids playing football in tiny fields so they can't run and HAVE to resort to dribbling to keep the ball and get rid of opponents. I did this with my friends back in Portugal. We played in a tiny square on the medieval part of the town and there was no other option. No endless lawns. Only after 13, 14 you got to play in a big field. Plus doing tricks with the ball was cool, not frowned upon because it was not "objective" at that level. |

There are many physical teams out there and some of those teams actually have skill.
England had chances this game so I don't think you can entirely fault too much physical, but they certainly didn't finish and maybe one more little touch would have done that for them. |

But you can win World Cup's with a wee bit of physical presence and lots of technique (see Spain in 2010, or Guardiola's Barcelona), but i don't see any teams winning it with lots of physical and little technique (the closest i can think of was Germany but even they are not as unskilled as some of English players, though they did and still do rely heavily on big guys).

Stupid Greece. Messing up yesterday's predictions. Well, another day, another kick at the can:
Italy - Costa Rica It was an aberration and Italy advances with a flourish, well, not a flouish, but a clinic on possession and timely goals. Italy 2 - 0 Switzerland - France Probably the hardest to pick, but France looked decisive and Switzerland, well looked like Switzerland. France 2 - 1 Honduras - Ecuador Ecuador all the way, but even with the win Ecuador is pretty much done as Switzerland beats Honduras in the final group match so even a win against France who doesn't care anymore having sealed up first place based on a (+6 goal differential) is pointless after losing to Switzerland in the first match. Might as well throw the match now Ecuador. Ecuador 3 - 0 |

1-0 Costa Rica at the half!
Five offsides for Italy who are definitely in the match at this point. A win by Costa Rica would toss England out of the World Cup and leave the Uruguay-Italy matchup to decide the second team to advance. A tie or win would see Italy through if they lose today. |

How can the referee not call that penalty? Good for the costaricans that they still scored, but that penalty should have been called as well as a card for Chiellini.

Very surprised with this Costa Rica team. They looked so comfortable in the last minutes when Italy was suppposed to press, and I believe they did not score another goal because i think they were more interested in letting time pass.

Very surprising indeed. Two very good victories at this World Cup, they are definitely on the move up the FIFA rankings. They could crack the top-twenty soon.
And with that, we have four teams marked for the final sixteen: Netherlands, Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica |

And England are out. But Costa Rica deserve to be through. They play positive football and play it quickly. I really enjoy watching them. Without wishing to jinx them, with England's demise, they are now my team!

Well France already have the two goals I predicted for them, only 18 minutes in. They look to be well on their way out of the group stage.
