Merge book in two formats

OK, I've got this book in two formats, LRF and MOBI. I want to load both versions into my library, but I'm getting the error that says "you already have this title". I'm good with that, but I don't want two lines for every book. If I load one format and convert to the other, that only takes one line, but it's not as nicely tweaked as the two files I have now.

There are discussions in several threads about the "Merge" dialog, as though it comes up after adding the second format. I'm not getting that. What's the step I'm missing??

I think you're asking several questions all at once. I'm going to respond on just one, the error message about formats.

Highlight the book in the main display window. Open the book panel on the right (if it's not already open). I believe there should be a listing of available file formats by default. If it says LRF & MoBI, then both ebook file formats are already in calibre.

Alternately, you can check on the Book Details (highlight book, right click, book details in context menu) window. This contains all the info from the Book Panel, and more.

Does this answer your question with regards to the error message?

The message that comes up when adding the book merely warns that it is a duplicate.

Merging comes after: Select both books and use the Merge option in the Edit Metadata dropdown.
I believe the shortcut key is Ctrl+M. See below.

That would mean something if the books had already been merged. Wrong error message.

@RSaunders - IMO the easiest way to add another format to an existing book is to drag it from the file system folder in which you have it, and drop it on Book Details panel of the existing book.

Wow, that is very cool.

Thanx to the other answers. Yes I was aware of how to see what formats a line contains, and Merge in Edit Metadata was the control I couldn't find. I guess it's smart enough to not display that unless there are books selected.
