When we moved into a townhouse from an apartment, we had an air conditioner that turned out to be very wrong for the new place. It was too small and had no dehumidifier built in. We moved on what was a very very hot and humid day. It was so bad, that the next day, I jumped on the net, found a good sized Frigidaire AC unit and we ran right out and got it. Cooled the place down very well. We could feel the cool air going from the kitchen window through the kitchen, through the sitting roon and bouncing off the wall. It was great. Now we are long gone from there as the rent was going up and up. So now we own a condo.

Glad to read that you are in your new place and all is well. So has hubby found a job yet?

That air conditioner is gross! That's all I can say nicely, gross! I hope the replacement is as it should be.

Gross! *shudder*

The replacement just got here. It came from a different warehouse in a different state. I haven't open it yet but this time Amazon put it in a different box which is great because I can use it to ship the old one back. they also put handle with care on it so I am hoping it doesn't have any issues. Here's hoping it works as I've been sleeping on the sofa which is comfortable but I miss my bed!

Just in time - you'll get your first taste of NC summer this week - every day in the upper 90's F with humidity!

Yikes!! When we live in Wilmington, NC it got hot but I think it was a different kind of heat. I had central air too. It was a nice apartment and I miss it sometimes and then there was the ocean but the hurricanes was enough for me! I picked up and ran to Tennessee's mountains. We almost moved back there but thought Raleigh be closer to the in laws and the jobs would be better.

I think I'll just hibernate in the apartment this week.

Unfortunately, and I jest not, this week's weather will be the predominant weather pattern until September - ridges of high pressure settle over the state and bake us with 90+F temps and 90+% humidity levels - with afternoon pop-up storms to make the air feel like a sauna ... We only get relief when a large enough storm system (with tornadoes, etc.) rolls in from the west (after leveling Oklahoma) to push the high pressure dome off shore ... but it always comes back ....

About the only good thing about this pattern is that hurricanes either veer south or bounce off to the north until September - when the pattern starts to break up - bringing cooler temps & the possibility of hurricanes making land fall.

This is why I suggested so many ways for you to keep air moving in your apartment - you have to acclimate yourself to being outside in this weather, and figure out ways to stay cool indoors without going broke on the electric bill.

Oh - the hottest/humidest week of the year is always the week of July 4th - when all of the great outdoor activities are going on (Festival of the Eno, fireworks, etc.) - so get ready!

Summer heat in central NC (where you now live) is what I call "baking" heat - nonstop, 90+ temps. If you're not used to it, it's very easy to get sun stroke without realizing what's happening ... b/c of my *ahem* mature years, I have to shorten my yard work times drastically now - I've had a few close calls with hyperthermia ... AKA 'being too stubborn to come back inside before you finish' The problem is you don't sweat with this heat, and hence quickly overheat. If you have to be outside, drink lots of plain tepid (NOT ice water) water and spritz yourself with a plant mister, and wear soaking wet handkerchiefs around your neck and wrists.

Weather patterns east of I-95 are markedly different - you'll hear weather reports divided according to I-95 -- it's sort of a climate divider. That's why you could live in Wilmington and want to return to it.

I'm in Charlotte and I honestly don't know what I would do without air conditioning. I just got back from two weeks at my parent's house in Bristol, Tn. Yeah, it's hot there, but not like here! I actually slept without air conditioning up there, no way in heck I could do that here!! My hubby has a term for the heat here. He says you walk out the front door and it's like 'walking into a wall' of heat and humidity. I swear it's even hard to breathe!
I absolutely totally understand why this area did not develop until after air conditioning was invented.
Oh, try to plan your outings for early in the morning if you can. The evenings don't cool down here like they do in TN.

Hubby got it installed! It seems to be working great as far as I can tell. No gunk on this one and it was packaged much better. The other one was a mess. So I can sleep in my bed tonight. Now I need a fan for the living room to take some load off the TPAC unit.

I ended up at the bottom of a telephone pole in Ft. Riley Kansas because of hypothermia. the first generation of BDUs were so densely woven (it was part of the thermal imaging bit) that they did not breathe at all. I've never been much of a sweater, especially my feet. so, combine heavy hot uniform, helmet, heavy dense leather gloves, climbing boots, Ft. Riley in July 90+ degrees and about 1000% humidity. my internal thermostat has been off ever since and if it starts getting bad, shoes are off instantly. amazing what a difference that makes

Thank you for your Service.

I don't sweat either. I just break out in hives that turns into a sunburn like rash that burns like one. This started in 2006 after I was sick with a virus. It's never went away. Doctor told me it was Cholinergic urticaria and to take Claratin when I have a bad flare up. It's evolved into if I push myself and we are talking mild activities after the rash pops up and I don't cool down I suddenly lose my hearing and then my vision goes wonky and blood pressure drops really low and I crash into the floor. The doctor says it's just part of anemia but when it happens it's scary. Drinking Ice cold water and rest seems to help the most till my hearing and vision comes back. It's frustrating I use to be a outdoors active person now I have to watch myself at all times.

I'm surprised at the ice cold water. to stabilize your core temperature, it's really important to start with tepid/body temperature water.

but yeah, I know how bad it can be. I start getting really light headed and as referred to, actually fell off of a telephone pole. not good. I remember going up, I remember working, I just don't remember about the 15 or so minutes before the fall. and fortunately I don't remember much until in the ambulance. I'd had another bad fall years earlier, but this was pretty nasty. lots of splinters and a once again broken tail bone that actually finally broke the bottom of it off so to this day it is hanging free

Absolutely! It will remain over 90 F until way past 9 pm - there's just no relief at night anymore ... until September.

Also ... sun screen is a must ... and loose thin cotton clothing .... I'm a big fan of 'surfer' T-shirts (long sleeve, baggy, breathable) and Joe Boxer drawstring cotton pants - for yard work and casual wear at home.

And - if you do venture into the outdoors - flea & tick & mosquito repellents are mandatory .... wear light or white clothes and check for ticks (black dots with legs) after a hike or walk. I'm hoping that our months of abnormally cold temps last winter (well below 32 F) killed off a lot of the nasty critters.

I think the cold water slows the heart down enough that I start getting enough oxygen again. The problem with Iron Anemia is a fast heartbeat and lack of oxygen to your blood cells. I actually learn that trick from a Cardiologist. If I am overheated tepid water has always made me nauseous.
