I don't know how Kobo is with the authors, but from the consumer point of view they are the next best thing after Fictionwise. I only wish they would carry multiple formats.

There aren't really multiple formats these days. It's ePub and Amazon other then the occasional PDF.

Depends on where you shop. Some publishers do offer zip files with everything from HTML to RTF and some vendors, like All Romance eBooks, offer multiple formats.

Anyway, I am surprised Kobo doesn't offer kindle formats. I don't buy from Amazon on principle, but I am sure there are a lot of others, who do, and read primarily on Kindle.

There could be licensing reasons or they competition reasons. I would also appreciate multiple formats, but so far I can deal with it. When I buy direct from publishers they usually have Kindle formatting. I think one time I avoided a direct purchase because they didn't offer kindle formatting.

I see what you mean. But I wish they hadn't cut down the distribution of higher codes so drastically. I can accept that they decrease the ratio of 65% and 75% codes, but it would have been better if they maintain - or just slightly reduce - the ratio of 45% and 55% codes. I wonder if there's anyone who actually uses those 10% - 25% codes.

Besides, just like what kristalana said,

Even if I didn't have much luck in the previous contest, I'd had at least a bunch of 45% off coupons that I would have gladly used if not for the higher codes flying around here . For the current contest, so far I've only gotten one 45% code. There's no fun at all.

Amazon owns the DRM servers. Amazon owns AZW3 and Mobipocket. you won't see any DRM eBooks using these two formats being sold outside of Amazon.

I have never seen any AZW3 eBooks sold outside of Amazon and I don't think you ever will.

Kobo would only be able to sell Kindle format ebooks that are DRM free, because they don't have access to the necessary data to download the encrypted versions to your Kindle devices. It's one of the three reasons why Amazon has such a lock on the ebook market in the US, the other reasons are that their website is superior to everyone else and whispersync makes it so darn easy to buy books and read them immediately (yes, I know you can do the same at B&N store with a Nook, or at Kobo with a Kobo device and maybe a Sony).

Kindle is a proprietary format that is only open to Amazon.

Amazon has adapted the same tactics as Apple with a close ecosystem.

You are stuck with Amazon telling you on how to use your device.

Kobo on the other hand offers more freedom.

There are dozens of places to buy Mobi format books from besides Amazon. You are of course stuck with Amazon for books where the publisher insists on DRM, but with Sony, Books on Board and Diesel closing down there aren't a lot more places to get DRM'd ePub's from for your Kobo either.

The Mobi format is outdated. I would not buy any mobi. Buy epub and convert it to azw3 would be the better way.

Well, the point really was that you can get stuff that works on the Kindle from more than just Amazon. For "regular" novels it doesn't make much difference whether it's Mobi or ePub IMO since they generally don't usually take advantage of the more advanced things you can do with ePub anyway. For say a non-fiction history book for example then yes ePub & AZW3 are the way to go. Anyhow most of the places selling DRM free Mobi let you download both Mobi and ePub so it's the best of both worlds.

Yeah, 30% is the best I've gotten. I'm hoping to get one 75% code yet, but the chances look pretty grim.
