Did you try multi-tabbing when you have store credit? If so, that causes a major glitch (or an intentional block) that gives an error message and essentially locks you out of buying books.

That did happen to me once, but it turned out they didn't accept Discover card.

See, this is what I'm hoping. And maybe they were making more money giving away higher codes because many of us would buy all the books we were kind of interested in instead of only the ones we really want? In any case, they completely killed the fun of the contests.

I'm guessing they were losing money, but gaining traffic/awareness. When these contests run, I notice my sales spike, but the savings come out of their proceeds not mine. This is not true of all their promotions. Some are done in conjunction with the author/publisher and there's an agreement in place on the split, but for coupons, since there is no way to know ahead of time which books will sell, they end up paying full commissions to author/publisher so far as I know. So if the coupon is 75 percent, that can add up to a loss rather than any kind of profit. (Example: If I sell Soul of the Desert for 4.99 and someone uses a 50 percent off coupon, they net 2.50. BUT they owe me 70 percent of 4.99 (or varying percentages depending on the country where it is sold, but in general).

For the even more expensive books when coupons work, they are probably sustaining larger losses (depends on the publisher agreement and I don't claim to know all of the agreements). But I'm guessing the reason they don't allow coupons on the major publishers anymore is that the losses are simply too large to justify even though there is an increase in traffic.

Thus, I suspect we will continue to see less generous coupons as they can't operate that kind of promotion forever.

When you get the "oops" message go to the upper right side of screen and click the "edit info" link. That will expand the payment method node, don't change anything, just click Continue. The transaction will complete but you will not get a receipt and it doesn't show up under your purchases but your credit card will be charged the correct and amount and the book does appear in your library.

I'm sure you're right. On the other hand they've been doing promo codes since the switch from Shortcovers to Kobo back in 2009 so who knows. Seems they'd have figured out what works & what doesn't by now. A new owner in the past few years and a new CEO recently can certainly cause a change as well.

I've only worked with a couple of Kobo folks on various things but I've been very impressed with their enthusiasm, follow through and attitude. They really do seem to be open and looking for ideas and also trying to expand interest in a number of products/marketing and so on. If you asked me even a year ago, I wouldn't have been looking at kobo products. What I've seen so far has impressed me such that not only do I find their products of interest, I find buying books there to be working out for me as well.
