You don't 'visit' other countries to buy ebooks?

It's hard to fathom what's going on with Rakuten, they seem to have cut off their nose to spite their face. And I totally understand your strategy to cease buying books from the Japan store.

Should the Rakuten model take over the rest of the world's Kobo store fronts as well, then I won't be buying any more Kobo books either.

I really hope not. Leave the other store fronts alone!

Kobo is pretty much my only access to purchasing ebooks because there's no Amazon and B&N in my country. Apple has geographical restriction, and Google Play is still pretty new; the prices are usually higher, too.

I wouldn't know where to start. Do I use paypal or VPN or lie about my billing/home address () ?

If someone could write a tutorial on how to use other stores, I'd look in to it.

As for Japanese site, maybe situation will change. Maybe this is just a little calm before a storm of coupons

And, let's face, it, some of the kobo stuff is buggy. I couldn't log in for a couple of tries to the contest. Others reported the same. Someone forgot a line of code and left out Japan.

There is a discussion somewhere on vacationing/traveling...we need that link with all the kobo info that someone suggested. Unfortunately, I don't KNOW the information that would go in such a link so I cannot write it!

The gist of it is that when you are logged in and you don't have credit card information defined for your account, you can change your address to say that you are in another country and save it. At that point you should see the books available in the other country in the new country's currency. The address doesn't need to be valid for the country, you can just change the country, and then change it back to your actual country (and fix the state/province, etc) when you return from your trip.

After 3 days of contests, I'm seeing this breakdown for the coupons:

30% - 20%

For those of you that are wondering, all you need to do to access other countries' Kobo sites is change the country of your billing address to whatever country you want to shop in. That's it. Kobo doesn't confirm billing addresses.

If you use paypal, you're done. You can just use paypal like you always do.

If you use a credit card, expect a phone call from your CC company before the transaction goes through, but again, that's it.

Also:
The Indian store doesn't have any publisher restrictions on coupons, but often has a different selection than the U.S. store.

The Afghanistan store also does not have any publisher restrictions, and has the same exact selection as the U.S. store.
