In any case, I might as well start spending 'em. The odds of an overwhelmingly appealing app for $40 showing up in the store seem slim. But whenever I go into the App Store my eyes start to glaze over. Nothing appeals.

Do people have any suggestions? While I don't read on a tablet now, that could change, so I think I'll get Calibre Companion and one of the reading apps. Is there a consensus on the best one? And I picked up the Audubon apps already.

Otherwise, I don't play games because I'm a fogey. So, are there any neat utilties, podcasts, guides, what have you, that people can recommend? As quoted above, I can't be the only person with this problem. I know, free money, if they poofed overnight I wouldn't miss them, but I figure I might as well use them while I can.

I'm having the same problem. I have a total of $60 to spend ($42 in coins and $18 in credits). I plan to spend some of this on interactive book apps for kids. After that, I haven't a clue. For the most part, I'm quite content with free apps; so I have little need for premium versions.

I was gonna mention the Audubon apps, but you already have them. Do you like nature sounds for background noise or sleep (rain, babbling brook, ocean waves, etc)? There's a ton those out there.

If only I could spend coins in the MP3 store

Or for e-books! That'd be great.

I have the same problem, and I do play games. There's just not a lot of games that appeal to me that aren't free (or have a paid upgrade version). At this point I've bought basically all of the non-free games I wanted and still have a ton of coins.

Not sure I can suggest for you what to buy, but I'll make a suggestion on what not to buy. If you keep up on the deals forum, you might know I'm pretty heavy into audiobooks. I noticed several audiobook apps in the Amazon app store from Mobifusion which were e-book/audiobook combinations with audio from Recorded Books. Some are rather expensive, but I figured with free credits/coins this might be worth a try. It turns out these apps do not store the audiobook natively. This means that if you do not have wireless service (like me) all you can do is stream the book while you are at home. Not a total loss, but if I wanted that I'd sign up for a streaming service. I would recommend staying away from these.

There's not a consensus, but the same two get mentioned a lot.

Moon+ Reader Pro
Mantano Reader Premium (my favorite)

A lot of people also like FBReader and Cool Reader, but those are free. I was using the free version of Mantano, but ended up buying both Mantano and Moon+ Reader because I was in the same boat as you with the coins.

I use Moon+ Reader Pro in preference to the Kindle Fire's reader. It has some nice features (such as swiping up the left side to increase brightness, and up the right side to increase font size) and is very configurable, so you can remove blank lines, stop it from automatically swapping between portrait and landscape mode when you lean the reader (one of my real bugbears with the Kindle reader, which keeps doing that when I'm reading in bed), etc. etc.

I used to have the same problem. I don't have a Kindle Fire, but if the software works anything like the Kindle for Android software you can lock the screen so it doesn't rotate. When reading a book tap the lower right-hand corner and a padlock should appear. If it is unlocked the app will rotate; if it is locked the app will not.

FYI, while there's no setting in the Fire's reader (unlike the regular Android app) you can lock the device from auto-rotating. There is a setting in the quick settings pull down (pull down from top of screen). Not as convenient as an in app setting, but it does the job. I use Moon+ Pro most of the time & Mantano Premium occasionally.

Thanks very much. I never spotted that feature, as it's not part of the Kindle Reader's options bar. I do still read some books (usually bought via One-Click) on the Kindle Reader app, so that's going to save me a lot of frustration.

Nice idea; I could use one in conjunction with my Bose Noise-Reducing Headphones when the uproar gets too much for me. I'll plan to get one.

Thanks. I'm a recent convert to audio books and these would have appealed. However, about 98% of my listening is done while driving or walking and I'm too cheap to have a data plan, so I'd have been outta luck. And coins.

I have the same issue, but if I have free apps that I use often I am planning to buy the pay version if one is available to support the developer.

I think the credits I have expire next month so I better find some soon!

And the vast majority of the apps I use most frequently only come in free versions. For the few that have paid versions, I have upgraded.

Calibre Companion is definitely worth it. I wasn't sure about getting it for the longest time because I can easily just copy the files from my Calibre library's network share to my tablet using ES File Explorer. But now that I have Calibre Companion, it is soooo much easier and handy to browse my whole library. I'm glad I got it.

Coins can be used for in app purchases too. I use mine for Candy Crush.

Let's see I've bought Moon+ Pro, Mantano, Calibre Companion, Diaro, Screen Dim, EZ Money Manager, Gsam battery monitor, Out of Milk Pro and a couple games for hubby's phone.

No matter, quick email and I got the credit.

For those that don't like being spied upon, be sure to uninstall after getting the credit, as it reports a LOT of info back to Amazon as you browse.
