I like looking at the collections page as well on scribd, Kinda like goodreads when you can see what books they like when they are similar to your genre.
Always search by author then click on the author's name to see all their books. I don't know when she was added as I haven't went looking for books in weeks seeing I am still getting settled from our move to Raleigh.

Jude Deveraux was part of the Simon and Schuster block. And a lot of other names. I just follow S&S and plow through their offerings. I wish I could sort by genre within the publisher.

Where is the collections page? I can't find that anywhere. I have created my own collections to sort the books I want to read, but where do you see others collections. I can only see my own collections.

I am currently reading a Rosanne Bittner title (Savage Horizons). There are such fine romance titles in the catalog now. I am really looking forward to reading more of them.

I created a shelf on goodreads for the scribd titles I find and want to read in addition to adding them to my library.

As far as the recommendations go, mine are a bit odd to say the least. I get like a huge scroll of Georgette Heyer and then some Hemingway and John Irving. Hemingway in spanish even
I am sure as I am reading more they will adjust. But that is just the one row of recommendation. There are many others so I have something to dig through.

I have used the kindle lending feature a lot. To really get anything worth reading out of it you have to join a group (there are some groups on goodreads that do this, and some lending sites) with a lot of people to lend back and forth in a particular genre or the selection really is kind of crummy. I haven't been able to use the Kindle Lending Library at all, because it isn't worth $78 to me to borrow 12 books. I mean really. My husband has Prime so I get the shipping benefit which is nice, but I can go through 12 books in 2 weeks (as opposed to a year ). And like you said most of these books are cheap and self-published and go free every now and then. So that is also not worth it to me.

But Scribd...so far in the past month or so I have read 25 books and I have hundreds more in my library. So I'm going to go paid with it when my 3 months are up.

I don't know if there is a collections page but you can do a search like "arthuriana" on Scribd and you can click on the collections tab and see all the collections on that (if you search that you will get my collection of books about King Arthur--I was learning feature but I wish it weren't so clunky to set up a collection because it took so long).

Here is a link to some historical fiction, when you put in a search you can then search, book, author, title, documents, collections.
http://www.scribd.com/search-collect...orical+fiction

I think the more open collection readers make it will get better and better. I have made several collections by author and genre. It has been pretty easy for me, much like goodreads where I have a shelf for scribd as well as library so I can remember which site they are on.

As for recommendations, when I see a book I have read I rate it or an author I like I will "follow". That may be why my recommendations are pleasing me. If I see one certain book that just keeps popping up I take a second look. I too will become a paid subscriber once my free time is up.

You can also hover over a cover and choose "not interested" that will help with recommendations as well.

Edited to add, If you like Phillippa Greogry they pretty much have all her back list. She is one of my favorite authors.

That's one of the ways I use the lending feature too, although I usually get the books I want pretty fast at lendleme. It does help though to be in a group reading the same genre.

I take it your husband has a separate account so you can't borrow any books via his account? Or is it just too much trouble? (This is the nosy writer in me. I often hear that it isn't worth it and I just like to continue to collect data.)

Everyone should read John Irving. Hmmmm, maybe they are matching up recommendations alphabetically, "this user likes books by authors whose last name starts with H".

I've been following this thread and when I browse the books available it appears that I've read (and liked) almost a third of the books that show up on the first page, probably an indication that Scribd has a lot of books that would appeal to me. I might have to give this a try.

Does anyone know if the selection in Canada is similar to the US?

John Irving.......
They do have Cider House Rules, and Prayers of Owen Meany. Fantastic! He is one of the authors that I buy his books. He is the rare writer that I can hate the subject matter but can't stop reading because of his writing and I have to see what happens to the characters.

Yes, he has his own kindle account and his tastes are so different than mine I wouldn't want to share it. Also my kindle library is huge and I like having it available to me at all times.

Oh no, what do you mean messed up. I am afraid to turn wifi on now. My Nexus updated after I got it to some 4. something thingy. I am in the middle of a book on Scribd, I don't want it messed up.

eat: had to check and the one it wanted me to update after turning it on was 4.4.2. So that is what I have. What all will be different with 4.4.3?

It wont push the update like a Kindle. It gives you option to download and you have to choose to install it. I sent a support email to Scribd but they only work on weekdays.

It now looks like this on all books. I am going to have to read on my Kindle till it's fixed. 4.4.2 is fine it what I had. It's 4.4.3 that you want to hold off updating to.

I tried downgrading the app, reinstalling and nothing has fixed it. So it's a KitKat issue that Scribd will need to fix.

Yikes. Glad to know I can turn on wifi and it not auto update. I'll wait on it then until they fix it. They got back to me right away when I asked the Fire question. Twice actually. Hopefully this isn't too big of a fix and it can be done fast.

I notice how nice and tan the backround looks on your attached pic. I wish the sephia was a tad darker on Scribd. It doesn't look that nicely tan to me on my Nexus. I think the kindle app looks darker. Otherwise its pretty good as is.

But I am doing a hands off the update for now. Thanks for the warning. But I am sorry that you can't use it right now.
