I am now reading "Gettysburg: The Last Invasion" by Allen C. Guelzo
This is an account of the Battle of Gettysburg; not the why of it, but the how. For a non-fictional abbount,I find it very hard to put down; it is a very gripping account of the combat. Currently near the end of day 2 (Barksdale's attack through the peach orchard), and wondering how it will all turn out. 2014 is the inaugural year of the Guggenheim-Lehrman Prize in Military History. This book was the winner (March 2014). The other shortlisted books were: "The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945" by Rick Atkinson "Britain Against Napoleon: The Organization of Victory, 1793-1815" by Roger Knight "Surge: My Journey with General David Petraeus and the Remaking of the Iraq War" by Peter R. Mansoor "The Men Who Lost America" by Andrew Jackson O’Shaughnessy (the American Revolutionary War from the viewpoint of the British leadership) "The Bombing War: Europe, 1939-1945" by Richard Overy I have most of these on my TBR, except for "Surge"; maybe too recent for a complete account. |

Finished The Martian a couple days ago and then read Walker by Michael Langlois. I enjoyed it, but the sequel isn't out yet and it is a fairly abrupt ending. I consider it more of an intro than anything else. Hopefully he will continue the story at some point. I may try The Lost Gate by Orson Scott Card or The Man Who Crossed Worlds by Chris Strange at some point soon. The review said that these were better written but still have similar concepts.
Tomorrow I will start Hyperion by Dan Simmons for the book club. Really looking forward to it. |

Currently reading Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith and finding it tough going. Not because it's not a good book - it is - but it's a bit of a downer. I can only take so much of it at the one time.

Still reading Du côté de chez Swann (Swann's Way), almost finished with the novella digression known in English as "Swann in Love". Page 363 on my paperback edition to be precise.
I'm seriously thinking of beginning The Fault in Our Stars to see what the fuss is about. I'm also tempted to begin Mark Zuehlke's Juno Beach: Canada's D-Day Victory - June 6, 1944 because of the D-Day anniversary and also because Canadian efforts and sacrifices seem largely neglected amidst all the WWII literature out there. Zuehlke appears to specialize in Canadian military history. Apparently he's written a trilogy of books about Canada and D-Day, of which the above title is the first book. I only want to begin one or the other because Proust demands some attention and I'm a little stretched for time. |

I have just finished reading Murder and Mendelssohn, the 20th and most recent Phryne Fisher mystery by Kerry Greenwood. That's another series that I have completed this year. Now I need to get back to Honor Harrington. I've set a small goal to finish reading all of those this year.

And explaining what it is really doesn't do it justice. (I admit, when first I heard it described, I thought "that's just disgusting". But that's so not true. ) @Hampshire Nanny: Supposedly there's a new one coming this fall, but who knows how long it will be before it's available in the U.S. Might have to go on vacation to Australia to get it. ![]() |

![]() French fries with gravy and cheese curds. It actually is delicious, at least until your heart stops. Edit: Or did I miss the point of that entirely and you're surpised anyone didn't know what it is? Last edited by Difflugia; 06-06-2014 at 01:26 PM. |
