Entitle: 6 month sub/12 books for $40

From cnet's cheapskate blog

Quote:
Bonus deal:*Reading time! If you love books the way I love books, you've probably considered subscribing to Entitle, which is kind of like Audible for e-books: For $9.99 per month, you get to choose two titles from a growing library (currently 125,000-plus) and keep them forever.

That's already a solid deal, but here's an even better one: StackSocial is offering a*six-month Entitle subscription for $39.99, the equivalent of getting two months for free. Or, to put it another way, you get 12 books (to keep) for $40, which works out to just $3.33 per book.

Great find. Thanks.

I checked them out. One of the main things that I was interested in was the selection of books in my subjects of interest. Though there were a lot of a books which I consider "trash" books, there were a lot, too, of good- --even great- --quality ones.

I chatted a little with a rep. The ebooks are all ePub and DRM protected. For some of us that will be a dealbreaker; for others, like me, that will mean that we need to think about it a while.

For folks wondering, it looks like it's Adobe DRM.

This is confusing. From the faq for how to download:

Quote:
DEAUTHORIZE your copy of Adobe Digital Editions by hitting Ctrl-Shift-D (Cmd-Shift-D in OS X). Do not worry, you will be prompted to re-enter your Adobe ID when you try to open a previously authorized book. Authorize your computer with Entitle.
.

If I have to deauthorize my computer and need to re-enter my Adobe ID for previous books, what do I do for new books that are not from Entitle? And can I read books from two different Adobe IDs on one ereader?

Sounds like yet another badly behaved app, that adds another license to your Adobe account and does NOT download via ADE.

Dealbreaker for me, if you have to read in their app.

According to the FAQ linked to above, yes it does download via ADE. They're using some kind of vendor authorization through ADE (not encountered it before, perhaps it's part of ADE 3.0?).

I gave the free week trial a shot and ended up quitting early in frustration because it wouldn't allow me to log into the Android app at all. I also disliked that logging in on the website didn't automatically take you to a welcome screen or dashboard of some sort to let you know that you were logged in. You'd be logged in but have no way to tell. I stated my problems in my review and someone higher up (the President, I believe?) actually emailed me about my concerns. Sadly, at that point the first impressions had ruined it for me so it never got anywhere. Maybe any problems have been fixed?

Also, I was primarily interested in Entitle because of the Simon & Schuster titles that they had but Scribd didn't. Scribd has since then cut a deal with S&S and they have a smoother experience (if you don't count search).

Sounds like they hired the same people to do their website that Kobo did, I quit using Kobo because of no login button on the home page.

I am not going to buy from someone where the instructions are to mess up the settings on my computer.

Could be. Perhaps they are releasing in ADE 3 only.

Another (and more major) dealbreaker, as I have older eInk epub readers.

According to Nate over at the digital reader, it appears that you can only have your computer registered to Entitle’s ebookstore or to another ebookstore, but not both. http://the-digital-reader.com/2014/0.../#.U5OTtuBye9M

So if I use this, I can't buy any other books from other publishers who use drm. Who's bright idea was it at Entitle to not allow me to use my own Adobe ID? Just another example of how well drm doesn't work.
