Finally home from work. Why is it that things only break when you are looking forward to being someplace else or even an early day off from work?

The one day we were scheduled to get off early, the stupid toilet at work (the only one) broke, flooded the bathroom, and was beyond our ability to repair.

We had to wait for the plumber (after locating one that would actually come NOW and not in the next couple of days). They tried really hard to repair it and get it back in operation for work tomorrow, but it became much more than even they expected. Augars, camera feeds, weird and old city pipe lines, lots more water, and still trying to find a way to fix it. Who would have thought that climbing to the roof, to snake out a pipe to a toilet down below, would work?

Five hours later (not to mention the big bill), and we finally get to go home. Fingers crossed that this temporary fix works and all stays well until the boss gets back in August.

Your plumbing broke at a time that wasn't "last thing Friday afternoon"? That would be rather a first around here. I hope the fix works.

Two rants this morning:

First of all it's a lot harder to clean the upper rim of my eyelids than I thought it would be. The doctor told me to clean the rims of my eyes twice a day with a q-tip soaked in a solution of water and Zwitsal baby shampoo to help cure my eyelid infection. The lower rim is no problem, as are the corners of my eye. The top rim is a lot harder, the outer half is okay but I can't stop myself from blinking when cleaning the inside half. I now also have very clean eyeballs because those get a scrubbing when I blink.

Second; what is the Belgian post doing with my package? I'm waiting for a package from the US and for some reason USPS decided to send it to Belgium first where it's been sitting with customs for a week now.

So far, so good, but no one has used it yet. Still waiting for the silicone to be totally dry and then the bathroom has to be disinfected. No one is scheduled to go in until just after lunch, as there isn't a working toilet yet. *sigh*

The kitchen ring main tripped. And then tripped again. Isolation and testing showed that it was the dishwasher. A leak and a burned out heating element mean that the dishwasher is a goner.

A replacement has been ordered, and should be delivered tomorrow (which is good), but that rather blows the money I was earmarking for a new telly. Our current model is now nearly 20 years old, and the vertical hold is starting to go....

The dishwasher was only 2 years and 3 months old!

What a rip. Even a cheap dishwasher should last more than 2¼ years.

Agreed. I think we were unlucky and got a duff one. But I think that I might spring for the extended five-year warranty on the new one, if the cost isn't totally outrageous.

That sucks. I really get the idea that things aren't made as good as they used to. In the past our washing machines and dryers lasted 10+ years, now we're lucky if they last 5 years (with less washing).

I dunno, Rump:

Pdurrant's bloody telly lasted him 20 years? Geeze. I mean, I thought I held on to stuff for a billion years, but that one--that one wins over me. (I still have suits that I wore in the 80's). I'm 99% sure that nothing electronic that I have here, consumer-electronics-wise, is 20years, or even close.

(FWIW: I will say that I purchased a Bosch dishwasher 5 years ago, with which I have been dead pleased ever since. I probably just jinxed myself, but...)

We've got a twenty-year-old TV as well. And the best thing: Eight years ago my wife did something to the lid of the remote control so we can't open that anymore to change the batteries - and guess what: no need, it's still working as if the batteries were brand new. It's a mystery, but we're certainly not complaining!

We're on our second Bosch dishwasher (we moved after 15 years with the first one), and the second one has been OK except for a fried control panel. Which, it turns out, was a recall that we never heard about, so the replacement, including labour, was free.

As for TVs? We finally hauled our 20 year old giant tube TV to the recycling depot this year and bought a new one. But it took three hefty adult males to move it!
