1. I think the UK went decimal in about 1978, long after Australia did (1966). You probably did much as we did, having a mix of old and new coins for some time, so that a florin (two shillings) was now 10 new p. It must have been awfully confusing!

A farthing was indeed one quarter of an old penny. That makes it 0.1041666... of a new penny. Close enough to one ninth for the points.

A groat was not 2d.

1971 is certainly when we completed decimalisation of our currency, but the first step was made some considerable time before.

I read about the lowest value coin recently in a BBC article about getting rid of the penny coin. Without looking it up I can't recall what it is, but it is from one of the "-stan" countries and there are about 3000 to a British penny!
