But: you can read part one without part two, but you'll miss out. Part two concludes the cantos, both in contents and emotional - and it is the emotional that is the forte of Endymion (and rise of Endymion). I was really blown away after finishing the Rise of Endyion. Finished it last week actually, and it's still haunting me. |

I liked Chris Moriarty's Spin series, which is three books.
C.J. Cherryh, Arthur C. Clark, Greg Benford, are all good. As are Larry Niven, Greg Bear, and Issac Asimov. These all tend toward the harder side of Sci Fi. If you want to cheap out, then check out some of the classic writers like H.G. Wells and Jules Verne at Gutenberg (not to mention the Sci Fi/Fantasy deals of the month threads in these forums). If you like Cyberpunk, then you can't go wrong with Neil Stephenson. I have read and enjoyed the Dan Simmons' books mentioned, as well as Kim Stanley Robinson's trilogy (good choice there) and the Honor Harrington books by Weber. The last few didn't sit as well with me as the first four or five, though... it seems like he's trying to milk it out or something. Last edited by Dngrsone; 05-31-2014 at 10:42 PM. |

Fool's Run by Patricia Mckillip. Out of print and hard to find and no ebook yet but it's one book I always want to have a copy of.

Another good one (which I'm not sure is in ebook form) is Dragon's Egg by Robert L. Forward. |

I will second the choice of Dragons Egg.
If you like time travel with a bit of humor, try "To say nothing of the dog" by Connie Willis. You can then search Project Guttenburg for "Three men in a boat" which is the early 1900 novel that the more modern novel parallels. |

Richard Morgan has written some very good SF. The one I have read is heavily influenced by film noir and whatever the literary equivalent of film noir is. It is very gritty and character driven with a first person narration. There is a collection of all his SF available from Kobo and Amazon.

Apache is a master of understatement.
I'm a fan of just about every author and piece of work mentioned so far. I will also add Jack Vance, whose works range from old fashioned space opera (The Demon Princes series, and others) to stories of the far future where science borders on magic (The Dying Earth series, and others). A very good and affordable introduction would be The Jack Vance Treasury. It's about $5, and you can reduce the price if you buy it at Kobo and use a coupon. I posted a description here --> https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...&postcount=128 |

I'm currently reading Resurrection which involves Aliens, Cryogenics and other such tropes. It's a good read so far. Click And at only .99 at Smashwords it's not terribly expensive either.

Amazon US It runs $7.99 on Kindle. And here is Dragon's Egg at Amazon. Amazon US Oddly they don't have the sequel Starquake also in Kindle but they do have it in paperback. Last edited by crich70; 06-04-2014 at 05:19 AM. |
